wow reefnewbie! the colors on all of those are simply amazing.

the castles: that's a nice rock. what do you consider a bargain? around here, the lfs charges about 25 for a little frag and a hell of a lot more than that for a rock. at a club auction, a small rock with just 3 or 4 polyps whent for 30 bucks.

Here's my orange ricordea from The Logical Reef (http://www.thelogicalreef.com) and part of one of my many green stripes.

The green stripe in the back makes the ric look really small, but it is about 1.5" across. The green stripe is just huge.

Hi guys all pictures are beautiful!!!

I am glad for the new forum, the mushroom lover that I am.

Here is a picture of a couple of unusual specimens. I've been told they are "Indonesian Ricordias"? I was wondering if I could get that confirmed. They are fairly large mushrooms with a beautiful texture, but don't look much like the unusual florida/yuma ricordias.

What do you think guys...

Actually, I would PM you, but the 1st section of the presentation (Ethics and personal responsibility concerning fish) ran so long my presentation, as well as Dan's got postponed until the April meeting. It was overly optimistic to try and cover all 3 topics in one meeting. It was a very impassioned meeting though, many differing opinions. I will PM you with the results after our April meeting! Thanks for taking such an interest!

Sorry to get off topic everyone. Any ideas about my mystery mushrooms?

I'm beginning to just love ricordias. Here's my pink ricordia that I'm trying to grow out to frag. I'm feeding him frozen prime reef. Hopefully it will help with growth. Seems to be doing fairly well so far. I only have a small single blue polyp, and a single tan polyp as well.

That is a holding tank in my fish room. It is 6' wide 2.5' front to back and 20" deep. It has a 5" sand bed in it. The pipes on the right are for a platform I rest my acropora on so it does not get dead spots from sitting on the sand.

Here is a shot of my main tank. It is a 265 built into the wall.

The main tank is a 265 perfecto with custom overflows. I basically built the basement around it. The rest of my tanks are all custom built.

A red mushroom like the one above is being sold on Ebay right now as a red ricordia. It is NOT a red ricordia. It is from Florida though.

those are very nice shrooms and camera shot...

what is your camera specs?

lighting? additives? and tank size?

DoomWeasel
04/11/2003, 04:47 PM
Thanks Katchupoy!

I have an 18g tank with 32 watt pc's. I don't really dose additives that often. Maybe once a month or so. However, I do add bio plankton probably 4-5 times a week. These mushrooms grow incredibly though and in great colors. The one that is in the lower left was actually a hitchhiker that I have since fragged a bunch of times.

As for the camera, I have a sony DSC-F505. It is only a 2.1 megapixel but it has a 5x optical zoom and a nice macro.

I love that morph - I've had it for about 18months now and it started as a single polyp and its is now starting to think about taking over the world. I will try and make some time to photograph some of the other morphs too and post them tomorrow.

I cannot beleave how some of you have twenty or more on one rock. Any body want to send me a loose one?

Everyones pix were very nice! Can't wait to trade for some rics, always hard to part with zoos, but I think i'm gonna make it a zoos and rics tank for the most part, you can only fit so much in a 10g (j/k:D) .

Yeah i got lucky i saw an ad in the paper, this nice lady was taking down one of her tanks and rebuilding it replacing the live rock new canopy and what not, so she need to get rid of all these mushroom and colt coral she had and she had tons of it! I got 3 bright green mushroom, two of the mushroom in the picture i got a third on some live rock i got from her too The one in the picture is the only one that attached in a good spot, one attached between two rocks which is under my colt coral it seem to be doing alright and the other to the glass/sand on the front it doesn't seem to be doing all that great. The 3rd type was attached too an empty snail shell its doing good too i have no idea what it is thou it's green and kind of furry! :p Great Find IMO the $5cdn made it even better:)

Pink ones are hard to find, and they are more sensative to damage. However, there are some people who have really nice pink ones. I think Ken (TankOfTheMonth) has some pink ricordias in his tank. Anyways, that's why not too many people have them and not many pictures.

Stretch, have those "bumps" gotten longer at all since you got those? If ya look to the right of the red shrooms, (above), those "hairy" shrooms weren't quite as hairy when I first got them, the green "cap" is still very green, but, the hairs used to be "pinkish" & shorter. There's a bunch of 'em on that rock, 9 or 10! Just curious!

I have a massive red mushroom in my 29g now. It truly has grown to an amazing size, considering there are easily 100 more in the tank. See for yourself, and compare it to the Flame Angel and the 4" Maxima. Maybe if it was in a 125g, it wouldn't be so impressive, but it looks like it is trying to match my BTA now. :D

That mushroom measures 5.25" across the disc.

Mach:

Is this the same mushrooms as the one above with the eyes. That one looks like red with blue dots. If it is they are the most prolific mushrooms I also have. We also had one we called elephant face with eyes a trunk and big ears. I say had because it moved and left four mushrooms in its place. I have these guys loose all over the bottom plus a rock covered with 30-40 small ones.

Fahz

melev
05/29/2003, 05:32 PM
The mushroom with the two "eyes" would be just to the right of the mushroom you see on the edge of the picture above. The big one next to the "eyes" mushroom is the semi large one you can see in the Massive Mushroom picture.

And when all of them are fluffed up fully, the "eyes" mushroom is hard to locate!

They do have blue dots on them, but they aren't easily seen except at certain times and at certain angles. And grow they do!

I'm probably going to have to start poking certain ones with copper wire to reduce the population, because it is getting out of hand.

Plus my xenias are spreading onto the intake screen of my MaxiJet 1200 that pumps to my Remora Skimmer. Soon I won't be able to do a thing in that tank, as the reeflings take over! :D

Mach:

Not the greatest pic but this is elephant face. Just setup a 58 gal last week so will have a lot room for all the loose reds I have. Plan on gluing them to one rock. All the big mushrooms moved off this pic rock and each left 3 or 4 babies.

Fahz

melev
05/29/2003, 08:15 PM
Hey, I like your elephant mushroom. It does look like one.

I find that putting a mushroom where I want it, I just cover the guy with a piece of netting, and secure it to the rockwork with rubberbands. After 3 days, the mushrooms are attached and I can take the netting away. You might find that to be a better system than glue, since gluing softies is always tough due to the slippery slime.

fahz
05/29/2003, 11:07 PM
Mach:

These guys have all attached substrate to there foot. When they do that I don't know if vail will work. I do know gel super glue works with no problem just don't get the glue on the softie. Has worked for me on leathers ricordias and other shrooms no problem. Lets you put the softie right where you want it.

I have two of them and they are the finest pointing dogs I have hunted behind. Excellent all round hunters and great family dogs love to please. They do have the stranges coats look like the old animal jackets from the 60's. The coloring on the head doesn't go with the body. Still limited numbers in US but becoming more popular all the time.

I just fed this dude (4 mouths) for the first time (I didn't know you could target them :eek1: what fun :)

If you target feed them will they grow faster and split?

Just started reefing so no clue, but it would make sense that they would grow faster (thus inevetebly split faster). From what I have read, it seems that many corals can get their energy from harvesting zoo (not zoa), but eating is benifitial and or neccesary. It would seem that feeding them would speed up their metabolic proccess to some degree.

Assuming I got that right... can you over feed? I have seen some posts that folks feed their ricordia about 2x a week..

I feed mine every thrid day. Sometimes I can get them to eat every second day but it's not easy. You usually have to wait twice as long or try over and over to feed them. So I just do it evrery thrid day so I don't waist too much of my time.

Over feeding is impossible, I'm not sure why but Eric told me so.:D And just for some added info from him he says that it only takes a few hours for them to digest the food you give them.... so you might be able to get them to eat twice in 24 hours? I'm not sure how long it takes for them to expell waists though.

Man, I always hit that post button too soon.

Flake, I've seen that ricoridas usually grow in size when I feed and don't usually split faster. I think they are just trying to accommodate for the large pieces of "reef suprise" that I give them instead of trying to split. Fedding them also increases the mouth population on your ricoridas. I notice that you can give them as many food chunks as they have mouths..... But make sure the food is not too small and not too big. They won't bother with something too small, and the won't be able to take in something too large. It takes practice.;)
(I've seen some mouths tank in two pieces, but it's not very common).

Melev, is that the shroom you were debating whether or not to keep, in the 3rd pic down? Beautiful Shroom! Nice shots everyone! I'm sure there are some visible shrooms in my reef, so, here they are (and everything else!) ;) http://www.rockymountainreefclub.com/members/Stormbringer22/Stormbringers%20Realm.jpg.JPG

My new corallipmorphs from eTropicals.com, a few hours after acclimating them on Friday. They've since opened up wide. I've got some newer pictures with them fully opened, but they're on my computer at home. I'll try to remember to add them tonight.

Folks,

Please don't use Vendor's pictures - even after you've made the purchase. We've had far too much trouble iin the past with folks advertising for certain vendors. Please wait until you get the goods home and take your own pictures.

Thanks.

Kevin

Light Blue Tonga... i think it's a discosoma... not sure though. this one's cut into a bunch of pieces. i had two big and one small. hopefully the two big ones will have enough surviving pieces for a nice colony.
