I have a question. If you were to put a peice of plain rock in your reef tank how long would you have to be in the tank until it was considered "live rock". I assume that it would depend on the variety and type of rocks in the aquarium with it. But there has to be a time table and live rock in the ocean has to start somewhere. I also understand that alot of the live rock is pieces of an actual structure that has been formed from calcium and corals that have built the reef. How long do the farms set their rock in the sea before they sell it as live rock? Hmmm?:rolleye1:

The farms like Tampa Bay Saltwater (http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com) and Gulf View (http://www.gulf-view.com) leave the rocks in the ocean for several years at least. Check their web sites for details. Dead rock in an aquarium will be colonized by life on nearby rocks, but will never have the diversity of the aquacultured rock from Tampa Bay or Gulf View.
