help IceCap owners

I have an IceCap660 ballast with 4pr of endcaps for 4 4' bulbs. My tank is 5ft and would like to either run 2 or 3 5' VHO actinic bulbs.

Question: Do I need to cut a pair of endcaps off or can i just leave them disconnected? If i leave disconnected will the 3 bulbs still fire properly?

IIRC, the ballast needs to be specifically wired for the number of bulbs, ie. different wires depending on the number of bulbs. I think there is a wiring model on the "IceCap" site if you don't have the instructions.
