I tried driving a 1/2" Mazzei Venturi (Model 384) last night with a Rio 2100, it was a very sad sight. Flow was almost non-existant and the bubbles are absolutely huge and inconsistent. The venturi orafice is much smaller than the current venturi I'm using.. Does this mean I need a smaller pump or a larger one? Pressure rated? Help! It's pretty obvious this won't work right on my current skimmer but I'm building a DIY for my QT tank so it could possibly work there.. Help!

Those are about the best venturis out there, but they do work on a pressure differential. You will need a better pump, preferably a pressure rated external pump. Use the rio for circulation, or better yet, toss it before it fries and kills everything in your tank.
Look at Mazzei's webpage for complete specs on flows vs pressure, etc.

Hey Grim,
I use a Little Giant 4mdqx-sc on my Mazzi venturi for me skimmer and this pump works very well with that venturi.

I am using a Little Giant 5 MDSC on a 1" mazzei. The high pressure is what makes it rock.

Probably a pressure rated pump- Little Giant 2 or 3 MDQSC should work.
