Sorry, I can't think of the word for it but are these corals considered one of those that release toxins in the water in order to compete for space?

They are, although reports have been variable. While producing them, they also may depend event more on their sharp sclerites for defense and reproduce asexually by branchlet dropping -these both play a role in the production and use in various secondary metabolites and resultant allelopathy in closed systems - of course, they actually have to live for awhile in a tank first!
