View Full Version : Your nominee for meanest clown

Maybe I should do a poll, but I have only had Clarkiis and false Perc. The Clarkii female was mean (the male was not). I actually gave mine away as they were so mean to the Kole. However she didn't really bother other fish (perhaps the swimming all over was bothering her). I have had two sets of Percs. The first set died in cycling disasters (the tank recycled). The second one jumped and one was eaten by a sally light foot and the other jumped. She lived for a few days afterwards.

I am thinking I will get a bubble tip and want a species that naturally go to the bubble tip. This leaves me with Clarkiis, Tomatoes, or Maroons.
I am still inclined to think that the Clarkii will be least likely of being trouble.

Female maroon - bites me whenever I try and harvest a clone or two (She has plenty of others). The last two times she's drawn blood! :eek2:

Female maroon clown, hands down the meanest, most vicious clownfish in the universe. I had to take all the guns and knives out of the house. She once killed a grizzly bear with her bare fins. Poor bear died with complete terror in its eyes, wondering what induced God to create such a critter.

How can you tell a male from a female?

CBOYFAN2020
02/21/2003, 04:28 AM
male is usually smaller if there are two. if only one in tank it will eventually turn into a female.

Yep, and the male is usually signifcantly smaller, if the two are paired. My current female was the male in my first pair. The female in that pair became egg-bound and died (after I had her for over 5 years:( )

Have a pair of ocellaris and I named the female after my ex- she's always biting the hand that feeds her. Whenever I put my fingers in the tank she comes for a bite, even drew blood once. Odd that she only bites me though.............

I think a clarki is a good clownfish to start with, i have one and it is peaceful(my 1st inhabitant of the tank), but nips the fins of new inhabitants of my tank. I agree with the majority and say maroon clowns are the most agressive. A friend has a breeding pair of them, and the female killed his dwarf fuzzy lionfish, which was nearly twice the size of her.....:D

Im not to sure about the largest, I've seen clarki and tomato clowns bigger, but they can be very agressive..... all clowns can be agressive, it just varies....my advice is to get a clarki....as I'm having no problems with mine.....:D

KORE_Nipple_GUNN(67)-
You've seen a clarki and tomato clown larger then a maroon? If so that's rare, according to "Marine Fishes" the maximum size of a clarki is 5.5 inches, a tomato is 5.5 inches and a maroon is 6.3 inches. According to "Dr. Burgess's mini Atlas of Marine Aquarium fishes" the maximum size a clarki attains is 10cm, a tomato is 10 cm and a maroon is 18cm, quite a big difference. Also I have never seen a clarki or tomato bigger then a full size female maroon. It is possible one of these clowns have attained a size greater then a maroon via some sort of mutation or such, but it is not common and it is not the "norm". The vast majority will never even get to their maximum size in the aquarium. I know this fact because I have been scuba diving all over the world and have seen fish in the wild attain huge size compared to their aquarium counterparts.

I'd say so. ;) This fish is a terror.

FWIW, size wise I'd bet a T clown weighs more than a Maroon given both are "maximum length". My female T clown is a brick.

I've got a cinnamon clown that used to be timid. As soon as it discovered the BTA it has become meaner and meaner. My Brazilin gramma looks like it’s been in a fight and my other fish are becoming reclusive and I know she’s the problem.

I think there’s going to be a clown/BTA looking for a new home soon.

My friend breeds clowns and his female melanopus is the meanest clown I have ever seen bites like hell. Especially when taking her eggs. I have also seen a 6 inch clarki and maroon clown both females that have nothin on the melanopus. We had a female melanopus and a female maroon stay together for a short while and it ripped the maroon up.

my coral knocking over, clam killing (knocked around two croceas so much they died from stress, leaves the derasa alone), rock pushing, maroon clown. She is slightly better behaved now that she has a LTA, I hope to try a large maxima clam hopefully she won't kill it too.

Maroon. Female.. Go figure..

She'd rip hair out of my hand/arm then parade around the tank with it in her mouth. Everytime I was in the tank. And that was when she was only 2" long.

She even jumped out of the top of the tank one day to get after me..

Later I was demonstrating to a fellow reefer.. She did it again. Lept up out of the water to bite me. Missed and hit the floor.

B!tch is an understatement.
