I liked this guy but I think my clowns got a bit too violent with him! Also they wold really bug when it came to feeding time, plunging head first to try to dig out any food that the anemone had swallowed.

It does inflate its tentacles from time to time, I've tried to figure out a pattern to when/why, but it is seemingly random. It is a voracious eater, quickly devouring whatever I direct feed it, which is usually lance fish or Silversides about 3 times a month. I also feed the tank Forumula 1 or 2 nightly, and the Rose grabs a fair bit of that readily. I've had it for about 14 months now, was ~4-5 inches across when I put it in the tank, it is now easily over 12 inches across, hard to get an exact measurment. No splits though.

Here's a pic of my LTA. Then I'll post a closeup of the GSM clown eggs on the rock behind the anemone. I'm very new to this digital photography thing, seems like the quality gets pretty bad when you reformat to meet the posting requirements, but maybe I just need to learn more about aquatic photographpy! Sorry about the glass glare. I also don't know how to post two pics in one reply - can anyone help me out?

Dickwood,

Actually I rarely feed it anything directly, but the clownfish feed it every day. They usually manage to drag it a cube or two of Formula One or Two before the fish get to have any:) . It's about 18" diameter when fully expanded. Has anyone heard of these things splitting like bubbles do? Recently it's been contracting it's foot in a way that looks like it's "thinking" about splitting. I think it's just random, but wondered if anyone had heard of that happening.

It's a 155 bowfront. I've been amazed at how much food I can feed the tank without any nitrate bump or algae problem and without a skimmer. Makes me feel bad for the fish I must have been keeping pretty hungry over the years.

Are those all carpets? I see why you want them they are really good colors. The only thing that worries me is i want to keep madarins and such so i don't know if thats a good idea since they can eat tangs. BonsaiNut, whose anemones are those? They are beautiful!

I love carpets!

BonsaiNut
03/13/2003, 10:51 AM
Those are "true" carpets - gigantea versus haddoni. Haddoni (also known as saddleback) carpets are much more dangerous in a reef tank -- I find they are about the worse fish-eaters of the clown anemones. I have kept them in reef tanks before, but I pretty much resign myself to losing a fish every half year or so. Having a clown pair in the anemone helps a lot to keep other fish away.

I have seen red, green and blue "true" carpets before. But this photo of the purple one is the first purple I have ever seen. They are from some Japanese reef sites I have been surfing the last few days.

BonsaiNut ,

Thanks for sharing the great photos. I see what your saying about the clowns mine defends the anemones like nothing else matters and that might be the answer to keeping fish out of there stomachs. Do you have clowns that host in your carpet? I have seen a lot of excellent tanks from japan and even a rare clown recently that is a slightly colder water fish.

Thanks for the pics the clams look great. What kind of lighting are you using? Is the Iwaki 70RLT providing alot of flow i am trying to not clutter the tank and wanted to split the return and run 2 sea swirls off that for all the flow in the tank. I was planning on using a mag drive 2400gph have you heard bad things about them? thats a good idea putting the skimmer next to the tank hidden i think i might borrow that one.:D

You know I only send one clam pic Itry to send more but the RC went to blink:lol:
As for the tank the tank is in my living room and is a small home so I have no room for refuge. the Iwaki don't put to much flow in the tank. I have my chiller in the crowlspace and by the time it get back to the tank is only 1000GPH so i have four MJ 1200 on a wave. I don't need any more water flow the corals growing like weeds as it is. As for the lights I have a CSL hood is three 250W Iwasakis MH and two 96W 7100k PC blue.

I would not put more than one anemone in the same tank, unless they are all clones of each other. Especially the same kind anemones as they will compete for the same resources in your tank. They can also detect each other and may unleash chemical warfare on each other to lessen the competition. If you do a search, you can find some other threads on this. Some people do not have any problems but others do so is it worth one of your anemones? I would look into setting up another tank for the new BTA. I have 2 tanks now, one for my green BTA and Im getting a rose for my other tank this weekend! :D

Dlckwood
04/03/2003, 06:50 PM
Your concern is respectfully noted but I am willing to try it. Most of the research that I have done suggest to not put two anemones in the same tank that are differnt spiecies. In most cases people have not had as much trouble with the same. I hope I am just as lucky as the rest.
DAL:p

TIGER SHARK
04/03/2003, 07:25 PM
Well I cannot stop you from trying, I was tempted myself but I dont want to risk it. In time, mine will split and I will have more so I can wait. 40g is somewhat small for 2 anemones also, so I would run carbon weekly and also keep up with water changes so to hopefully keep the toxin levels low if they do release them. If you can get the anemones on each side of the tank, that might help to. Good luck and let us know how things work out!

Well the one I have right now, is up under a rock so its really hard to see, so I dont have any pics but hopefully the rose I get this weekend will pick a better spot to call home. As for splitting, Im just going to try the heavy feedings, and give it optimal living conditions and we'll see if that works. I dont actually know that it will split, but they seem to quite often with the above conditions.

I thought they would because they always try to host in all of my other corals but none are really big enough for the both of them. Do your clowns try to host in your other corals? If not that might be the problem, some clowns do and some dont, its a real tossup. I have 440Watts of VHO. Try a picture of clowns in an anemone near your anemone.

I saw those plastic anemones on a website the other day too but I think they cost more than a real one. They should be making affordable alternatives to live anemones...

From realistic prospective, I doubt all these three anemone can thrive together as chemical warfare will definitely kill the weaker ones :p

And why the heck they have 9 clowns?? Why they want one lonely one when all the others enjoying their mate :))

Maybe the fake anemone is so expensive because it takes a lot of technology to make fake percs host in them :D Those fake percs are just sooo picky.

I had 3 (now 4) anemones in a 75g reef, till about a week or 2 ago when my smallest one split in two...

My other 2 anemones are HUGE, and thriving very well. It might be that they are all the same type of anemone, and therefore not fighting. My maroon clown pair host in all the anemones, and they are like one big happy family.

I've had 2 anemones for a year and a half, and the 3rd anemone I got last July.

Hi P.A.
I'm sure you realized, I was just teasing :p

But I know what you mean though. If they are same kind, they may not figh with each other as I have seen tank full of anemone that almost took over some folks's tank (BTA)

Well my tank is pretty small but it is all I can fit in my room. It is a 40 gallon breeder tank with 45 pounds of live sand and 45-50 pounds of LR. It has 65 X 4 power compacts over it. I keep it at 79 degrees and I run the lights 12 hours a day. I just started using blackpowder and coral-vital and my clam and feather dusters seem to love it. I hope I dont get an algea blume from it in the long run.

Here are three carpets and some bubble tips on one side of my 180. There are two more blue carpets and some rock anemones in the tank as well. The bubbles stay up high and dont bother the carpets. The carpets dont bother each other at all. They do compete for light. They all will sting my acropora and kill it quick though.

The Only problems that I have with all of the anemones is with my SPS, actinidictus, rodactus, and ricordia. Most of the other softies and LPS are OK with light contact. The Carpets all lay over each other and compete for the best spots and for the light but I never see any evidence of them stinging each other. Some of the these animals have been in the system since 95 and all of the carpets have been in the system at least a year so these are long term observations.
Even though, I have had problems with a roamer every now and then and I Would NOT recomend that one mix with the SPS. The reason mine are mixed is the SPS are the last editions and it just happened that way. I would not add soft corals (sinularia and such) or anemones to an SPS tank.

Not saying this is your story but anemones will split when stressed. only god knows if that is what happened to yours but seems a little weird it died right after it split? Are you water parameters alright?

Hope you the best of luck it is very beautiful.

Dlckwood
06/27/2003, 06:15 PM
It split because it was healthy and the water was good. It then never regrew a mouth and after a few months withered away. It is still alive in my tank but has no tenticles.

anemones sometimes do split when things are bad. SOme guy used to trigger splitting by doing water changes which stress them for a small amount of time.

Actually, it was even more red. I only had it for a few days though. It was the strangest thing, that one shrived up while my rose from alvin was fully expanded and had bubble tips. I wish it was the other way around. I wouldnt have minded as much if alvins died.

Great thread, glad it's still active.

Here's my first BTA. Color is kind of drab, but you gotta keep a spot in your heart for your first!

By the way DLckwood (had to edit to spell that correctly :), I saw in an earlier post the discussion about keeping multiple BTAs of different species in one tank...I've got 4 different ones, all totally thriving.

TwinRotts
01/16/2004, 07:37 PM
And you were asking for marbles. I guess that's what this is. All you can usually see is it's tips, but when you can see everything, he looks like somebody splattered white paint all over a neon green surface. Too cool.

TwinRotts
01/16/2004, 07:39 PM
And my rose. This one's actually probably 15" across when fully expanded.

These two clowns actually bonded with all 4 BTAs in the tank. But they never feed them, just protect/clean them. Can't wait for them to spawn.

Very cool anemones TwinRotts. Are all of those in the same tank?
DLCKWOOD:p

TwinRotts
01/16/2004, 10:13 PM
Yes they are. This pic shows 3 of them. The pink is just to left of kole tang, green marble is above and behind the pink, just to the right of the red zoa colony, and rose is on far right. The original green is on the other end of the tank.

This pic was taken exactly 1 month ago today, so you can see how fast they're growing from the previous shots. The pink actually rises all the way up to where those red zoas used to be (moved them cause the green marble kept them closed all the time) and covers almost that entire hole.

The clowns care for all 4 of them, but for some reason don't feed them.

I think some day I'm going to set up a BTA/clown only tank, with maybe some zoas scattered about.

TwinRotts
01/16/2004, 10:35 PM
Ok, this is the first time I've tried this camera feature (stitch multiple shots). This is 90% of my tank (right side is cut off a bit). Had to shrink the crap out of it to make it fit, so we'll see how it turns out. No fish showing---just look at the yellow tang that did get caught. And of course the green marble BTA is hiding. This is under actinics too. You can see the last green BTA just above the red zoas on the right (those are the ones I moved from above the pink BTA).

This is sad, I poured a beer a while ago in a frozen glass...then came in to "check" the boards. Beer is warm and pizza is cold now. Ahhh the sacrifices we make:rolleyes:
