newbie question :)

This thing has grown from 0 to 5 cm in 2 months. looks like som kind of sponge, except theres a hard middle that branches seems to grown out from.

any ideas ?

how big does a sponge "normaly" grow ?

It really will depend. Sponge grows in various shapes and patterns. Some will spread out and encrust while others will grow like balls, long fingers, flat plates, etc... In any event, they can grow large given that conditions are good and they they stay healthy and nothing eats them.

My Potter's angel seems to like sponge a lot and is always picking at it!

I had a few white sponges growing in my tank a couple of months ago, they grew long like fingers. Eventually I peeled them off the rock and threw them out, I thought they were becoming a bit of an eyesore.
