skimmer help

Okay , can someone help me here. I am making a sump, What is better a skimmer in the sump or one that is not in the sump directly. I am note sure what to do.

I think weather it's in sump, or hang on is more a personal preferance, and driven by space available type of decision.
The key is to buy a quality piece of equipment from the git-go, so you don't have to upgrade later.
