After reading several books before starting my tank, I though temperature should be at 75 degrees, and salinity at about 1.023 or 1.024

It seems that a lot of stuff I've been reading on here about people's tanks and stuff, Many people keep their tanks warmer (about 79 or 80 degrees), and a higher salinity (1.025).

What is the reasoning behind this? Are these conditions better for certain fish and corals? Does it promote faster growth?

Check this article (http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish2/aqfm/1997/nov/features/1/default.asp) for some answers.

FWIW, I keep my SG = 1.025 to 1.026 and my temp = 80 to 82 degrees F... primarily b/c higher salinity is better for corals (more dissolved trace elements and such available to them) and higher temperature drives up the metabolic rate of the system. Definitely do not go above 82 degrees for too long of a stretch or your corals will likely bleach.
