Refugium?

Okay, I have two whisper 3's I am using for circulation only and I was thinking... Could I use the media bins as a refugium? Turn the flow down as low as possible, maybe put a screen on the water return. I figured I could put some reef mud or GARF grunge or something... smaller piece of live rock and move some of the caluerpa prolifera I have in the main tank and put a light strip across the two? Would this work? Thanks! If not, does anyone have any recommendations for a hang on refugium?

I have heard of people doing similar with their internal overflows... they will add some live sand, some rock, and some algaes... I can't see why it can't work... give it a shot... maybe you'll stumble across something.
