Wow, great timing!! I was looking for that stuff the other day. Thanks Larry!
This stuff is critter safe?

It's everything safe! I've been using it for a long time. If you go crazy with it (like use two tubes in a short time) your skimmer might react, but otherwise no problem. Beats paying the big bucks at the lfs!!

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread! I need some way to do some attaching of baby frogspawns, and didn't want to pay 10 bcks for a little stick of epoxy at the LFS...
Is this the soft plumber's putty (the type used to seal drains that remains soft) or is it an epoxy resin that hardens?
:)

Chris,
The stuff I get at my HD is an epoxy that hardens, works great and is like 2 bucks a stick.

Is that the Harvey's they are talking about?
Thanks

Chris,
The brand my store carries is made by Duro but if the Harveys is a 2 part that you must mix together it is also an epoxy that will harden.Look at the instructions and see if you must mix it.

Hey guys--
Make sure you don't buy the wrong stuff!!
Harvey's Plumber's Epoxy Putty is the good stuff. It comes in a blue and white cylindrical tube like you might buy a cigar in. It is a round, grey stick with a white center. You just break off a chunk and roll it between your fingers, thus mixing the two parts together. Totally reef safe.
Harvey's Plumber's Putty is the bad stuff (regarding reefs). It is oil based and some people who have made the mistake have suffered bad consequences as a result of using it. It comes in (unfortunately) also a blue and white container, but it is shaped like a small tupperware container. Like a pint-sized, round cup looking container. LOL I wish I could explain it better.
I took some pictures tonight of both, and will post them as soon as my $$%%&33&& computer will allow me to. In the meantime, remember this: cigar-like good, cup-like bad. :)
Please, I don't want to read........again.......about someone who used the wrong stuff and nuked their reef.

I got the good stuff tonight. I haven't used it yet, but it was 4.99 for a 4 oz tube.
I believe that the stuff in the pet stores is 2 oz for 10-15 bucks.
And Larry's picture is exactly what I got.

Any other brands from HD that might work? My HD does not carry the Harvey brand. I saw different cigar looking putty epoxy but don't know if it will work. There's one for ceramics, one for wood, one for glass, one for copper pipes, and many other more but no Harvey brand. Thanks.

Were you looking in the plumbing dept? It sounds like you were looking in the paint area that has all the other glues.
If the stuff you found is a two part, it may work but I would be careful.
i picked up the 4 oz tube of this stuff yesterday for $4.99. Sure is great to pay half the price for twice as much stuff!!

Just use superglue
my home depot only had a OATEY brand 2 part epoxy putty. As stated above, this should be fine. No Harveys in this town.

I've used Devcon's White Epoxy Putty from Home Depot. It looks and smells just like the expensive LFS stuff. Just used little bits at a time. Never could get the guts to go crazy with it. Anyone know if this stuff is ok?

I don't know about Harvey's stuff, but the "other" brands of epoxy can be deceiving. The kind you want (same as coralife) has a green outside, and a white inside. You may have to pop the top to check this...
Other kinds contain nasties and/or steel filings. I have seen a green outside w/yellow inside, and the yellow outside with grey inside, and who knows what else.

cool - the devcon is green outside and white inside. Sounds a bit un-scientific but, like I said, it looks, acts, and smells EXACTLY like the aquarium product.

This is the stuff at my HD. Comes in a tube and the putty is green on the outside and white inside.

Well I went to the HD near me, and I couldn't find any of these. Then, I went to Lowes and I found an epoxy putty by Loctite. It's dark blue wax on the outside(much like the green stuff on the aquarium brand), and white on the inside. The contents are epoxy resin, amine resin, and polymercaptan. No steel. Are these the same ingredients on the Devcon and Harvey's brand? It smells just like the stuff I buy at the LFS.

Is this stuff safe/good for attaching mushrooms after cutting...Im sorry if this is a dumb question...I'm new to fragging. I have some mushrooms that I'd like to attach....and if using superglue...are all superglues the same/safe?
thanks

The beat way for shrooms is to wrap them on a rock useing bridal veil. Are put them in a container filled with coral rubble for them to attatch to.I think useing epoxy for this would be inpossible. If you let them first attach to a small shell are rubble, then ya can either epoxy are glue them to a bigger rock.If useing glue always get the gell.HTH

Tommy,
Sorry for being dumb......What is Bridal Veil???

danman,
IMO mushrooms are the hardest things to propagate. Not that they don't attach well it's just that they are hard to handle once you cut them off. I have found the easiest way is to drop them in a container of small rubble and let them attach themselves. Then glue the rubble where you want it.
Teri,
Bridal veil is a small mesh type of netting that can be used to hold a coral onto a rock while it is attaching it self (I've heard it can also be used to make bridal veils:)). You can buy it at cloth shops and it's real cheap. Fish nets use it too. It come in several hole sizes, I like the larger holes. Beware, If you leave it on the coral too long it will also attach to the veil. Probably no more than a week. Xenia about three days.

My LHD (local Home Depot) carries Rectorseal brand of epoxy putty and Ace Hardware has their own brand. They don't list any ingrediants on the package and the putty is grey. Does anyone know if they are safe?
Rick
Hi all,
I would be a little careful with this stuff. I have used it with great succes to give a little stickiness to rock and to even to attach frags, but have noticed that some corals are sensitive to it. I had it melt down a beautiful acropora formosa. A few others have had the same experience. BTW, I have never had this happen with super glue gel. Just to be clear, I used aquastick by Aquarium Systems. I believe it is the same as the HD stuff that comes in a stick.
