View Full Version : Changing Filter Media

I've noticed in the past few weeks that the filter media in the Tetra filter, which hangs on the back of my nano reef, is for a better word, "Clogging Up!"

My question, since I know there's much needed good bacteria growing in there, can it be removed and washed or replaced? Would it be possible to do it in steps, remove one filter cartridge and then another at a later date?

The tank itself has a lot of beneficial bacteria within it, but I'm not sure what damage I would be doing to the bacteria content within the aquarium. Thanks!

Greg,

I am not really familiar with the Tetra filters, so I am not sure what media you are using. I will assume you are meaning the bio bags with carbon in them. If this is the case, the bags should be removed at least weekly and replaced or cleaned extremely well. If you don't food, detritus, etc will build up in them and lead to nitrate problems. In fact, this might explain the hair algae I see in your pics.

FWIW, with your live rock and sand you should have more than enough beneficial bacteria in the tank. IMO, you really don't need the filter media in the Tetra. Maybe just run some carbon in the bio bags for a few days each month.

Griss,

The thought did cross my mind about the connection of the hairy algae and the filter media. I know that the replacement media cartridges already have carbon pouches built in them. I might have to make a visit to the LPS and see what I can find.

Thanks for the advice!
