View Full Version : Good german beer

I am looking for a lager that is a good representation of what German beer should taste like. Even though I enjoy Bud Light I would hate for somebody from another country to drink it and assume that it was the best the USA could do...

What would you recommend?

Which is a lager!

Why yes, indeed it is! I'm tired of domestic beer and what something new. Also taking a German class so I thought I would get in the mood.

If you meet any German folk in your class, I would highly recommend that you keep your past enjoyment of Bud Light to yourself. ;)

And remember, you're not speaking German properly unless you're spitting while speaking. It's my first language, and it's just awful-- one step below Klingon on the crudeness scale.

Lol I always found Klingon to be a beautiful language! I don't know what it is about Bud but I enjoy the light carbonated flavor. I also like Blue Moon, Carona, Dos XX, Sol, Labat blu, Miller, most Hefaweisen's (spelling), and just about any lager as long as it doesn't have some sort of fruit flavor added. Ale just doesn't sit well with me sorry to say...

Hofbrau.....or Schwaben Brau were my favorites when I was living over there....course I was in the 7th, 8th and 9th grades so my tastes have changed a bit ! But from what I've been told their still very well liked brews !

I was about to be shocked but remembered the drinking age is MUCH different, lol!

Well, drinking laws even here do not apply to private in-home use. I'm taking about moderate use with the immediate family, not as in a party with friends. I grew up with beer being on the dinner table often and wasn't denied it even as a child. I actually think it headed-off the fascination for it that most of my friends had.

Each state has different laws concerning drinking. Iowa law states that people may drink beer in their homes if they are over 18 (if I remember that correctly), however here in arizona you cannot purchase or consume beer unless you are over 21. My family made sure to instill within me that beer was not some forbidden beverage and that if it is consumed within reason that it can be an enjoyable and tasty drink.

May I suggest skipping German lager altogether and moving right along to Belgium. Stella Artois is a proper starting point IMO.

Dont give up on ales...there are some fine examples here in the USA that give the europeans a run for their money.

Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

Want a good representation of the Vienna Lager style? Dos XX Amber. Mexico didn't know to brew beer until the Germans arrived.

Warsteiner == horse urine

Hubby drinks Sam Adams

Don't know if it's good or not since I don't particularly care for beer. If I do drink beer, I drink Michelob Ultra (and I'm not even sure you can call that a beer, more like flavored water).

Sam Adams is a great non-traditional tasting American beer. I am very fond of it, but my wife usually drinks it before I can have any :(

Take any of those heavy beers out of the fridge for an hour before you drink it. Drinking it super cold is like drinking a good cabernet sauvignon cold, it's just wrong.

One of the best I tried over in Germeny was Bitburger Pils. The stuff they sell here is alright but wasn't the same stuff the Germans get.

IMO - best site for getting ideas for what you'd like to try: http://beeradvocate.com/

Like starting a reef, lots to read about and learn then dive in and enjoy!

Some beers/breweries I enjoy: Chimay white, Duvel, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier (and the Dunkel), Brewery Ommegang (3 Philosophers, Hennepin), Unibroue (Maudite, Trois Pistoles ), Bell's, Samuel Smith

Hacker-Pschorr - been making beer since 1412.

I like the Octoberfest brew... Good stuff.

Warsteiner is good too.

I admit my fav is Belgian though. Chimay.. The white label stuff.

I also like Foret. Its an organic beer. Creamy and smooth. Similar to Chimay white label.

There is a great liqour store here in Tampa. 3000 Beers. I've tried a bunch but Hacher-Pschorr and Chimay are the ones I like.
Always have a few 6 packs of Hacker-Pschorr in the fridge.

What can I say, I'm German.

I like the other German beers picture here, and also Dinkelacker.

Sam Adams makes great commercials. But they use too much hops and it's too bitter for me.

I tried a Belgian beer called Straffe Hendrik, and it was interesting, but not my cup of tea.

Which of their brews are you drinking and at what temp? What's perceived as "bitter" at one temp might be pleasant taste and aroma at another.

PS - poo poo on whoever mentioned Stella. It's like the Bud of Europe.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of Bud, why not try the ORIGINAL, real Budweiser:

Which of their brews are you drinking and at what temp? It's been too long; whatever was on draft at the place I tried it. But they don't hide the fact that they go overboard on hops.

my bro loves washstiner.. that thick wheat beer.. it not bad.. it can really know you one!!! but i's too thick for me.. fill me up like.. i like pauliner better... my bro like that even better !! he says when it's a 'fresher' batch.. a slice of lime and it's the best beer as beer can get... ( he lived in germany for almost a year... he tried a lot of beers... drinking them pint bottles.. it's weird.. he say they brink tap way way more than bottles.. they say it's fresher... and they will only take the beer is there is foam in the mug.. no foam = no drink... again.. i think thats weird cuzz i want to drink it as soon as i get it.. not wait for the foam to subside....)

I agree that Stella is the Bud of Europe. But I also mentioned that it was a good starting point. Certainly not a destination.

I about poo'd in my britches when I walked into the beer distributer here in this tiny little town I live in and saw Hacker-Pschorr. They always keep a case in stock for me.

The name is what first grabbed my attention 30+ years ago. :D

See if you can find this: Weihenstephaner Original (or the Weihenstephaner Tradition for a fuller body)

I've not tried this yet, but what I have had from this brewery has been very good.
