I've read somewhere where you can put a recirculating modded skimmer on a stand behind your tank without sticking it in a sump. Anyone know anything about this?

Sure, that would work just fine. You just have to make sure its leak proof and the feeder pump is in your tank as well as the output.

make sure it can not be knocked over(by a pet or child)

Any recomendations on what skimmer, I was looking at the Octo recirculating NW150. I haven't seen much out there for recirculating skimmers, but maybe i'm dumb and not looking in the right place

I use a das skimmer. For a 55 you would just need a ex-1.

It one of the best skimmers for the money! A lot better than the NW150, IMO.
