NOPE, there ARE NOT healthy fish there. I stopped buying fish there 10 years ago, yes 10 years ago because of there crappy looking fish. Why would any store leave dead fish in the tanks all day? Over the course of the last few months I have noticed a trend at Coral reef. Cleaner tanks, less dead fish, and more corals. I took a chance and bought 2 false percs at a great price and added them carefully to an established tank. Within 4 days they exhibited symptoms of internal parasites which is the reason myself and my friends stopped buying fish there 10 years ago.
I did not qt the fish as they were the only 2 fish going into the tank. A hospital tank would not have worked even if I had one as they died too quickly over one day while I was on a 24 hour shift.
Debbie is the only employee I ever seem to deal with there and she is great but I am never going back there. I dont want to deal with store credit or refunds for dead fish bodies. I dont want an apology from them either as it doesnt matter since I will never go back in there. I just want you guys to know so that you dont drop your guard like I did.
This post isn't meant as a rant, I have bought drygoods there over the years including my 220 gallon Perfecto and stand because they are cheaper then most in the city. But watch it there and dont kill all your livestock by infecting them with Coral Reef's unhealthy fish.
I went to Ocean Design today and told Jaime what happened and she rolled her eyes and sold me a pair of Black Ocellaris's at a huge discount. The fish are absolutly gorgeous and healthy. The reason I know that they are healthy is that all their fish are qt'd for 2 weeks or more. I have bought well over 50 saltwater and freshwater fish at Ocean Design since they opened and have never lost one mysteriously. Not one ever.
Puffy, dont be mad at me, I know you love Coral Reef ;)

I'm not mad--just disappionted. I know you only took a chance on them because of me. I will be sure to direct them to this thread. I hope Chris wasn't too upset.

I dont blame you, I took the chance. Kris was upset because she named the clowns.

Most of the fish from Ocean Design I have gotten have also died of internal parasites. Their back room is a QT, but the fish room still has disease all over the place.

Part of my routine on fish from lfs is always to feed meds for internal parasites. I watched my male solarensis from there waste away over 2 weeks from internals even while he was eating the medicated food. And I saw one in there just a couple weeks ago with obvious signs.

Jamie is terrific, I really like her a lot. And OD does try to QT fish, though I would not at all say they are successful at it. As has been mentioned, they QT, but regularly are adding fish to their QT system, so when fish move to the front they are carrying fresh diseases with them.

Sorry to hear that Joel. I have not had the same experience at OD and cant agree about the disease at OD. I have had great luck over the years and have not had a fish die from disease if bought from Ocean Design. The prices on the fish are another story :) .

Don't want to give the wrong impression: I'll still buy from them (and fish for fish, before Coral Reef) for sure. But will still try to QT and med for internals before adding to my display.

But neither place is my first choice.

I dont buy fish from either store now, but previously i had great look with most purchases from ocean design. I dont like them for other reasons but i would surely buy fish from them before coral reef. I had pretty good luck with coral reef until the last time i was in there, i bought an imperator angel that ended up wiping out all my livestock, it brought velvet into my system and im only now about to finish my self imposed qt.

i've only bought fish from OD and never had any problems, maybe because i go in almost twice a week and keep an eye on the fish i want and have them hold it for me so i can watch it as the weeks go on.Ocean Design is my qt

Where do you buy your fish from ostrow?

Sounds like a store that needs to clean out it's system and find a better supplier.
Jeff, you're adding the clowns to the 180, going to have naked and black clowns?

Same here Amaya. I have just purchased fish there for many years. I pay the big bucks since I dont qt fish and haven't needed to since switching to them many years ago. I think its a combination of good wholesellers selling to them and their mini-qt system. I have never had a bad fish from them.
Anyway this thread isnt about Ocean Design, it's about Coral Reef and their unhealthy fish.

HAHA Bob, the Black Clowns are going in another tank. The Gold Strip Maroon and the Naked Clowns in the 220 would kill the new ones and me if I tried that.

Surprising that the Maroon gets along with the Nudists.

As long as they stay way on the other end of the tank. The porno actors host in my duncans and the maroon gets 2 rbta's. I would never do it that way again but the fish are beautiful and get along as long as they stay in their own neighborhoods.

Jeni, your Duncans are still on a frag pug. I have some from D.L.C. that are the size of a baseball that they host in.
