View Full Version : "It is what it is." Oh, is it?

A phrase in the current vernacular is driving me crazy. Rappers, TV house flippers and little old ladies in the nursing home are all saying, "It is what it is," followed by a pregnant pause during which the listener is apparently left to ponder the profundity of the statement.

Could "it" be anything other than what it is? Does this mean that sometimes "it" is NOT what it is? If so, how does one know when "it" is not what it is. Is knowing the difference that which makes the phrase so profound?

The next person who tells me "it is what it is" is going to get "it."

Consider crp's and BigSkyBart's responses. Both want "it," and both have different ideas of what "it" is. (At least, I hope so, for Bart's sake.) Therefore, how could it be what it is when we so clearly see that Bart's it is not what crp's it is? If anything, we see that it is not what it is in many cases, is it?

Can we do a little skiing while I'm there? I hear that Big Sky is the "it" place to be this season.
