dunno about that, it should be fine, all the songs I've downloaded from itunes have been in mp3 format (I havn't downloaded any and none in the last year or so). Maybe dwd or one of the others will chime in soon.

the new stereos support alot of file formats so I would think you would be fine, look and see if you can find the specs online for the stereo you have and we can look and see

I think the issue is whether the mp3's you get from iTunes are protected or not. I don't know about her car stereo, but my cell phone plays several formats including mp3, but they can't be protected.

from the iTunes website

Know your rights to rock.

Burn the music you buy to an unlimited number of CDs for your personal use, listen to it on an unlimited number of iPod players, and play it on up to five computers. Now, download iTunes Plus songs for the new, lower price of just 99˘. These songs feature higher-quality, 256-Kbps AAC encoding — twice the standard bit rate — and no DRM (digital rights management). With one million indie tracks just added, there's up to 2 million iTunes Plus songs to choose from and play on any iPod, other digital music players, and an unlimited number of computers. For no extra charge.

and no DRM (digital rights management).
AAC encoding

thats the two things we needed to know

You're right. We've already transferred our own ripped songs, but we're looking for a source for new songs. The Verizon store is pretty limited.

ok - files from itunes are in AAC encoing (grrrr dang Apple) and it says your radio will only read mp3 and wma files so you will need to convert or download somewhere else.

I'll look and see whats out there to convert the format, at one time it was easy to do but who knows now.

ok - since iTunes is supposedly not DRM protecting the downloaded content - as said in the statement on thier webpage which I posted above, you can do the conversion (supposedly) in iTunes like this person did, otherwise you will need to strip the DRM code off the file and then convert it and there are programs out there for that as well.

Here is the persons write up I found -

Convert m4a (aac) to mp3
Published by Elliot Lee on 7/27/2006 in Geek Stuff and Quick Posts.
I used iTunes to copy songs off the VBS CD, which encoded them in AAC format (M4A container). My video editor doesn’t accept that format, so I needed to convert them to mp3. After trying lots of programs that Google offered me, many of which claimed to be “free” but were really just “free trials”, I finally found the solution in a forum post. It turns out that you can do the conversion right in iTunes, totally free and totally cool.

1. Go into iTunes Preferences, and change the importing mode back to the MP3 mode you like

2. Now select the tracks that you want to change back, and go to the Advanced menu. There is an item called “convert selection to MP3“.

This menu item lists whatever the current setting is in the importing prefs.

Now, this might not be good for the audio quality, but I don’t really care: I don’t listen to music that carefully. Thanks, Hannah W!

yeah my stereo in my truck will play it as well. her stereo just doesn't support the format. I hate it when companies modify formats like mp3 and make their own propriatary formats and then lock you into only using thier format, luckly it seems like even though they are still making dozens of formats they are atleast making thier products compatable with alot of formats

Shanna - I woudl convert to mp3 not wma or other formats mp3 is THE standard format.
