View Full Version : Can hoses be TOO TIGHT on barbs?

I'm working on the plumbing for my tank tongiht and my return lines are REALLY tight on the barbs. Like.... REALLY tight - to the point that the barb bulges the hose a bit.

So it dawned on me - is there such thing as too tight? I could probably get away without putting hose clamps on it - it's that tight. (not that I'm not putting hose clamps on - but just saying that's how tight it is)

90% of my brain tell me this tightness is a good thing - but the other 10% says "what if the barb cracks from the pressure - or what if the hose splits from the stress?" (I'm using braided hose)

Just curious before this thing gets wet in a few days!

it should be tight. running the hose under hot water for a little bit will soften it up so it goes over the barb fitting easy

That's what I figured - but just wanted to check to be safe. I knew they should be tight - but didn't know if there was such a thing as TOO tight.

you can tighten the clamp so that it starts to squeeze through the hose...not good. I'm a firm believer in "tight is right, but too tights broke!"
