Hi
Would these be ok to store my saltwater or do the containers have to be food grade. http://www.waterbuttsnbottles.co.uk/waterbutts.htm

I'll add to this question... and if they have to be food grade, how do we KNOW they're food grade?

Brute barbage cans. Any of the brute line is food grade. There is a stamp in the plastic, something like NFS or NSF. Why go cheap compared to what we spend on critters.

Brute - got it. Lowe's sells Brute cans. Not that that helps our UK friends...

I actually work @ Lowe's, so I'll have to nab one after work tomorrow. ;)

I think those would work fine. I just use regular old 5 gallon buckets to store my water.

i only have a 12 gallon tank so i dont need to store much water. i've stored it in plastic storage containers from Walmart and mix it in white 5 gal buckets from Home Depot. nothing special and i havent had a problem since the tank's been running for two years.

I use a vrute garbage can as well the one that is food safe. I have a question for all of you that use them does the salt water start to smell after a while or is it that I have it in there for to long or something.

Eventually airborn bacteria will build up in them. I keep mine covered at all times and still every couple months dry it out and wiped it down. I also keep a powerhead running 24/7 so it doesn't go stagnent.

you definitely need some water movement in that gallon just put a powerhead in there

Many thanks for your input on this. With regards to powerheads, I do water changes every two weeks then mix up the salt for next change and leave it to stand, only putting an airline in the night before i use it (25L jerry can, lid is too small to fit a powerhead in).

It all depends apon how long that water's going to sit there.

FWIW, If you made clean salt water with an artificial salt mix, I do not beleive it needs any stirring or aeration during storage. I do not stir mine.

However, if you have used tank water or water that might have organic materials in it somehow, then it might become anaerobic and have problems if not aerated.
