Reliable and quiet would be cool.

Jeff: do you find them to be quiet? When I had one on my Turboflotor, it rumbled a lot and was hot.

Eheims are pricey but hard to beat them for cool, quiet and reliability.

Mag 12s are nice but they produce alot of heat and are noisy. I use Rio Hyperflow pumps. The HF17 is 1090gph. Powerful and quiet.

The 3500 (middle one) is silent and cool to the touch. I use it as a return pump thinking I would replace it with an Eheim. I decided not to as I wouldnt gain anything.

I prefer the mag drive and have had no problem with noise.

I have had Quiet One, Mag and Eheim. My vote would be for the Ehiem, then the Quiet One (for continuous operation application) and then Mag Drive.

Eheim or Mag...

I have used Mags for a long time. I have a Mag 5 running in one of my tanks and a Mag 7 in my pond. They run hot and are not silent, at least the 7 or 8 that I have owned over the years. They do have their place in the hobby though. They run forever and are inexpensive.
As far as I know Eheim does not make a pump that will produce over 910 gph (1262). Canar asked for suggestions for a submersible that will pump 1000 gph+
Quite One and Ocean Runner pumps fit the bill. Any others?

There is a Eheim 1264 which pumps 4500 lph / 1190 gph. But I don't know if you can get it in the US.

I ordered the Mag

It is for my chiller. I have been feeding it from my 90 return line from the begining of time. For some reason every couple weeks the 90 stops getting water sent upstairs. I need to shut the ball valve to the chiller. Then the water returns. Then I slowly open the ball valve to the exact same place and they are both happy again. Works for a couple more weeks and then does it again.

The chiller has a brand new pump coming!

Thanks a bunch for all the input.

Ted

I ran into the same sort of problem. Maybe a gate valve would work better, so you could fine tune the flow better. Doesn't help now, but just a thought.
