I have been a computer user since 86'...
I'm going to college right now to get a degree.
Currently I've been able to skip the first BIT class...
but they want me to do the second...
Even though this stuff is very remedial...

So far (mid term), I have an A+ grade!

Problem is this...
Earlier this year our instructor told us that he did not care if we played games or surf the net while he lectures. It is our education and to do with it as we like.... As long as we don't disturb the class... I am on the second computer next to the back of the room. I don't have any speakers hooked up, and was play'n TRON on a emulator... ;) Another instructor from the class (empty) next door, comes into our class to observe our instructor.
I guess in his class he must have different rules, because before I even noticed he was there, he was brushing up against me reaching over my head to turn off my monitor. He walks around the line of computers to the otherside and tells me..."You don't have to be here... You can leave". At this point, I am thinking to myself this guy is over reacting just a tad bit... I look over to him and he is glaring at me. So I quietly pack up my stuff and leave. I had already taken the exam that day... and all that was left... was our teacher lecturing.... As I leave the classroom that instructor(not my teacher...) meets me in the hallway. He says "stop acting like a kid, do want me to drop you from the course? Is that what you want?"

I replied "speak for yourself" and kept walking without even glancing at him. (This is the only thing I ever said to him....)

Am I way out of line?
Should I file a complaint or just go into class next time like nothing happened?

I will challange it if they try to kick me.
I have read the student handbook rules.
Nothing I have done seems to violate any rules.

hey man,
i feel for you totally. a lot of courses i took back in college were a breeze. unless the instructor who came in was the dean or chairperson for the school, i don't think he had the authority to come in like that. he seemed to be more of a distraction than you were.

have you spoken to your teacher yet to explain your side of the story? what's his opinion?

hey if the teacher said it was okay, then i'd do the same. i just hope that he doesn't try to cover his own *** and leave you out on your own.

good luck,
jeff

"have you spoken to your teacher yet to explain your side of the story? what's his opinion?"

I didn't want to disturb his lecture... nor hang around another 45mins to discuss it with him... My adrenline was pumping and I could feel a deep sense of rage wanting to escape through my fist... So I kept my mouth shut and left...

When I go in next time... either I will get a talking to... an escort to the door... or they he will act like nothing happened...

Should I take any preemptive measures at this point?
Or
Just wait and see what happens?

If you believe "your" prof who will be giving you the grade in the class noticed the disturbance.....I'd do a little damage control. I would find out when "your" prof's open office hours are and pop in for a quick visit.

If you have to make an appointment or do something more formal - I'd wait to see how it pans out....but if you can pop by for a visit....ask a question about something else......and apologize for the disruption, briefly explain the situation and then move on - I think all will be good.

I just don't think you want him to think you are totally apathetic, take his time for granted or were surfing kiddy porn in the back.

I just graduated with a degree in Comp Sci, and I can totally relate. I've had the classes where the teach says do what you want, just make the grade, I've also had the asses that were legends in their own minds, and treated every student like crap. The only thing you can really do is find out if the professor has tenure( I think thats how you spell it) if they do, all the complaining in the world won't change a thing. Unless you were sexually harrased, and it sounds like you weren't, you're up sh*t creek. If the professor does not have tenure, you may be able to file a complaint with the head of the department. More than likely it will only make you look like an *** in all the professor eyes. I'd let it go, just give that jerky professor a big smile and a warm hello next time you see him. That will get him better than any type of formal complaint that you can make.

Let me know what you do

Most of my college profs didn't give a rip if you went to class or not, others thought their class was the single most important thing you could possibly be doing with your life at that moment. Like GV said I'd pop in on your prof and tell him what happened. Like spsboy said I'd also let the a-hole prof go. I had a few profs I couldn't stand and whenever I'd see them I'd give em a great big wave and a "hiya perfesser!" as loud as I could (especially if they were talking to somebody), just irritated the s#$% of of em.

"If you believe "your" prof who will be giving you the grade in the class noticed the disturbance.....I'd do a little damage control."

The guy never even skipped a beat... The only person I believe that was disturbed... was the instructor from another class...

There were disturbances in the class earlier that day from people talking... Which were dealt with verbally, from the teach. I however was quiet and minding my own business doing my own thing. When superprofessor came to the rescue!....

My teacher is one of those very outgoing nice to everybody, all around nice guys... He use to cut hair for a living.... ;)
I would be very suprised if he found me to be a disruption...

I really like the advice about being nice to the guy and at the same time being a thorn in is side.... Good stuff...
I will have to practice this.
;)

Thanks for the advice... I go back to class wednesday...
I will let you folks know what happens...

I will definitly use discretion picking my class instructor in the future.... ;)

Well, I went in to class today expecting the crap to hit the fan...
The teacher stood up in front of the class.... and said that I was the smartest one in the class for having left....! Everyone cheer'd with big crap eating grins on their faces...!
:D

I guess "superprofessor" went back into class and *****ed everyone out after I had left. Even took the teacher out in the hall for a quick gripe session. It turns out that "superprofessor" is my teacher's boss.

So we have new rules now...
Turn off all monitors when the A-hole is around!
;)

It was really funny to see how much smack our teacher flipped about his "boss". He is a good teacher even though his boss may disagree... but it didn't stop the school from offering him 2 more classes to teach for next quarter.
:D

I did not expect such a turnaround of events...
But very happy it did go this way!
Thanks for the advice people.

Glad your issue turned out for the best....

Your professor ate more crow than you know I am sure. My advice is to lay low the next few weeks until the other professor forgets about you. It is a good thing you didn't give the guy too much information as to what you were doing. I am certain this incedent will come up on your professors annual review.

Obviously the other professor has little people skills, he should of handled it differently. Sounds like little man syndrom to me.
