View Full Version : Coral Spawning

I've been thinking lately about sexual reproduction. (Well, who doesn't?). But specifically in reef aquaria.

Has anyone had corals spawn in their systems? If so, did any survive? Did it "nuke" your tank?

Does anyone have any thoughts on what conditions trigger spawning? I'm wondering if there is potential for applying this in coral farming.

Thanks!

Coral spawning could be triggered by phases of the moon according to a program on Discovery channel. As far as nuking the tank I don' t know. I would expect that if you have a light controller with the moon's phases you might be able to trigger the same responses as is found in the ocean.

The only coral whose offspring actually survived in my tank after a spawning was my Sun Coral. I have tens of baby sun coral polyps throughout my tank now.
