Lobsters...are they safe?

I have a 30 gallon reef tank...I wont be having this tank for more then a year-1.5 years. Were going to be getting a 150-200 gallon tank in our new home next april when we build it. I was wondering if a blue spiny lobster or purple lobster would work...I have a reef tank...The blue spiny lobster is so pretty.

Many or all lobsters are predatory on small fish and similar animals, but I don't think they'll go after corals.

I think i'll pass if you have to do that. I'll just stick with a saron shrimp, or harlequin shrimp. I just have to figure out a way to keep the starfish. I dont want the choc chip star to eat my coral

The harlequin shrimp eat only live starfish, which might be an issue.

I have the purple and orange lobster. I dropped him into the tank about 8 months ago, we saw him hit the bottom and run under a bunch or LR, and he hasn't been out since. We can get a glimpse of him with a flashlight, but it is a treat for my kids to spot him in there, and he has grown from about 2" to 3" and molted many times. I have never had any of my clowns, mandarin, small damsels go missing.

I built a 180G into my new construction a year ago. do you have basements or are you on slab in Idaho? If you're on slab, then skip to the good luck, but if you have a basement then: the lumber yard can do a load calculation to make sure that floor system that you use can hold the static weight of your tank. It is great to put the filtration system in the basement. The cooler temp down there acts like a chiller, there's a lot more room for a refugium, frag system, etc. If you can, put a slop sink and floor drain down there also.

haha i thought spiny lobsters had petite claws, most fish shouldnt be an issue. they tend to go after bottom dwellers, but will gladly get full off of a meaty/veggie diet. use caution/keep an eye on him. the purple yellow lobster, is it debelius' reef lobster :D he's good with larger, healthy animals, as well as wrasses, burrowers. smaller fish and inverts are at risk.

I kept a slipper lobster for about 6 months and during that time he ate every single snail in the tank. Be warned.

I had purple one and rarely saw it. I noticed a couple of my smaller wrasses had clipped tails almost as if they were cut with scissors (lobster claw, hint hint) and I actually saw him try to catch one that was in the rockwork. Mine had gotten to about 5". So when I broke down my tank to move it and caught him and traded it in at my lfs.

Tight fitting lid is also a consideration. I once kept a freshwater crayfish. He dissapeared one day and I couldnt find him for over a week. Then one day whilst cleaning behind the bed in the spare room I found his fossilized remains. He had walked over 100yrds through the house (mine very long and thin kinda like a train).

I would imagine a lobster is more than capable of the same.
