I believe it is a sponge.

Perhaps some type of melon sponge.

Post it on the Other Invertebrates forum, but please include size info and water depth info. There are several west coast invert experts there, and I'm sure Leslie or one of her buddies will be able to ID it for you.

If I found that in my tank I would be like *** :)

It was just found on top of some rocks, so no idea about depth or anything sorry.

Rosseau may be right, it may be a melon sponge, but... all the info I can find about them makes them sound like abyssal creatures, and I don't suppose this one came from multi-thousands of feed deep, did it? It has a very un-spongelike base as well, it looks like it has a mantle surrounding something of a foot, but maybe that's how all melon sponges look. Again, I'm sure the LACM crowd can ID it. Did you take the pic, or someone else find this animal?

Don called my attention to this post. It's the gumboot chiton, Cryptochiton stelleri. Largest of all chitons, it's found in the intertidal & shallow subtidal around the rim of the north Pacific from Japan to southern California. They're not as plentiful in my area these days but still abundant further north. Most chitons have mantles that reveal at least some of the 8 shell plates but in this species the mantle completely covers them. A grazer on algae like nearly every other chiton. Prefectly reef safe except for the fact it's a temperate species and larger than many nanotanks! ;)

Cool. It did appear a little too "advanced" to be a sponge.

looks like a snail xD. I dont think its a sponge, im no expert, but dont sponges just sit there? i wouldn't think it has a suction cup.
