I have a yellow clown gobi in my first nano (12g). He is highly visible and sits on the highest point in my tank and has tons of personality.

I am setting up another tank (also a 12g) and would like suggestions on nano fish that would be very visible (not hiding all the time or sitting on the bottom) and also be friendly or reef-safe in case I add a shrimp or coral or something later.

be careful with the yellow gobi....Mine died after 3 weeks in my 12g aquapod. I have had it up for a year. He wouldnt eat anything except what he could find in the lr. I guess there wasnt enough for him.:( .... I have a royal gamma and 2 clownfish in mine. I have had the clowns for 1 year and the royal gamma for 6 months

A pair of Firefish or Bangaii Cardinals would be nice.

The Yellow Clown has been going good for about 2 months. I target feed him frozen brine shrimp with a pipet. When feeding time comes around, he comes right up and yanks the shrimp out of it.

A pair of Firefish or Bangaii Cardinals would be nice. - Would these be too big for a little 12g?

royal gamma - My searches say this is a very secretive fish... does yours hide much, or is it out a lot?

I would love a clown, but if I get one, I want a anenomie with it, and I don't think I am ready for that.

Keep the suggestions coming, and Thanks!

My royal doesnt hide....he is out and about all day. I have a gbta in my tank and he actually guards it from the clown fish. Not that they want to host it or even tried but the royal swims about 2 to 3 inches from it most of the day

gbta = green bubble tip anemone. I have an RBTA (rose bubble tip anemone) for my clown...they look great.

I am getting ready to set up a 10 gallon nano and I am going to put in a pair of Purple Firefish. They are pretty amazing looking fish. I would go with those or regular Firefish if I were you.

Oh and I have Yellow Clown Goby that I have had for about 2 months. He sits on top of my toadstool and eats just about anything I put in the tank. He is my smallest resident but I am pretty darn sure he's king. He pushes the Ocellaris Clowns and my Royal Gramma out of the way at feeding time.

I love my tailspot blenny. He's out and about all the time and very colorful!

Here he is with my other fish (neon goby and true perc):

i love my 6 line...crazy personality, beautiful, and very active, and readily eats anything..however a little shy

if the tank is going to be a species tank...i also really like purple/pink dotty backs, beautiful vibrant colour, and always out, reef safe but not so good with tank mates..(fish-wise)

Rainferd's (sp) goby is very pretty too...

If you are looking for passive, stay away from fire clowns, they are more aggressive than even maroon clowns. Hands down the most aggressive clown I have ever had the pleasure of owning. They are gorgeous though.

Ditto, fire clowns are NOT passive.

He looks really cool. What does he eat? Does he stay twards the bottom, or top, or move all up and down?

I second the twin spot blenny (Ecsenius Stimatura)
I used to have one, and it was by far the coolest fish. Out all the time, and tons of personality.

I wonder if I could find one of those around here.

Okay. So I finally got a fish.... Pretty little thing. Looked nice enough.... thought it was a royal gamma.... it isn't.

It is a Royal Dottyback.

Yep. It is going back to the store the first chance I get... Totally viscious little bugger! As I speak... he is trying to take on my coral banded shrimp.
