Hey everyone, i was wondering if i need more flow in my nano, i got a maxijet 900 pumpin' not sure weather to go bigger or mimic and stick another in there with it.

so far i got a Brittle star, 380w Acitinic/HQI fixture, Clarkii clown, blue/yellow damsel, and 23P of fiji live.

I know i need 6 more pounds, and a skimmer, but is a seaclone 100 too much for a 29g nano? am i over skimming?

Ill post pix in a little while, just gotta get my friends camera over here -_-.

any help is appreciated, thanks!

Another powerhead won't hurt.

Two fish is plenty.

What kind of light fixture is it?

When they say one pound per gallon liverock, it's just a rule of thumb. You don't need six more.

I had a SeaClone on a 29 gallon and it did very well. People bash them and call them SeaClowns, not true, won't overskim.

I would love to see pictures.

i have had the seaclone and never liked it!!tunze and deltec make great skimmers for smaller tanks.as far as flow i would say that you need more...have you sen the tunze nanostrems?or the Hydor Koralia series?they create a nice flow and come in various ratings.i dont think you can overskim really, unless you get a REALLY big skimmer you will be fine IMO.looking forward to some pictures!

ill think about it, but i like the seaclone a lot better.

if you stay posted ill put some pix in here within a week. Its a generic fixture, comes on monday.

yeah its been about a year since my last tank so i need refreshing ;D. I was thinking maybe one more clown cuz i might be getting a carpet anemone and a condylactis depending on how the carpet does. but yeah my fish are doin fine, i got some Kent micro-vert food, calcium, and coral suppliment.

i wanter to know a couple more things, how do you get polyps to stick to the back like ive seen a lot in nano cubes. And whats the significance of Frags, because they're just as expensive as large size corals/sps.

Thanks guys! :)

I have a seaclone 150 on my 29, and it works great. I found that if you open the air adjuster all the way, then close it little by little. You can get a great flow. I pull out a full cup of dark waste every week. I was looking at a light fixture just like that on ebay. make sure you keep us updated on how it works.

great pics mate!coming along nicely.i just noticed your earlier post about carpet anemones..i would stay away from them if i where you.they can grow to be more than a foot wide and are generally high maintenance and 29g seems a bit small for one..the condy would be a better choice IMO.Having said that it still requires ALOT of light and is rather aggressive,at the same time these are supposed not to have a relationship with any particular fish, and it is rare for any type of clownfish or damsel to reside within them.also keep in mind that some hermit crabs will try and make a meal of it.even though anemones are really cool (i have always wanted a rose anemone),they are hard to keep healthy in a small tank and some believe that their care should be left to the more experienced aquarist with larger systems... just my two pence...
apart from the size i quite like the lights you have!careful with the yellow tail damsel..they are very aggressive and will bully most other fish even bigger ones.i have had to remove one from my system,it was freaking the other fish out so much they would not come out to eat!unfortunately its a lively and good looking fish :(
sooo angry ,damn that rap music....

Toygrr
11/18/2007, 08:47 PM
alright man ill take your advice. Keeping that in mind, i did see a full brightly cololored anemone, so ill ask them about that one. Disappointing tho, i really wanted a carpet :( beautiful blue ones for $20 about 6 inches wide already. Ill stick with a condy i guess :|

LOL ill see about the damsel, i know a guy who had a 7" sergeant or general, can remember the species, but it ate any other fish that he put in, cept the fat *** brittle. Name was Sarge'.

hopefully the lights come tomorrow or the next day, tryin to go to San Francisco to get the anemone, wont take too long depending on the traffic. would it be alright if i threw 1-2 Dusters in there too?

any other chems i need for SPS and anemones besides what i got? (coral-vite, calcium, micro-vert)

I think these might be what you're looking for, they're called frag-mags:

i dont get what you use it for or how. I mean i know somehow you attach it to the frags' rock, but how?

oh nvm i get it, but in the nano reef of the month he had polyps directly on the glass, i didnt see any mags.

i know that anemones need superb water quality!they are also messy eaters so make sure you have good filtration.as for SPS i have never kept any so not really sure.but i guess if you keep calc and alk at the right level then you should be ok.keep an eye on your magnesium too.it helps balance out out calc/alk in the water and the absorbing capacity of your corals.

A lot of people/places sell frags attached on little ceramic disks. The disks can be glued on to the magnets with various glues or epoxies and the magnet is held in place on the back glass with a magnet on the other side.

I've never seen pics of this done but I think what you might have seen is a fragged ceramic disk glued directly onto the glass.

As for the different prices and sizes of sps, I don't know as I haven't priced sps's, but I will when the time comes.

No. Those pc's will spill light over in every direction just like a little bulb on the ceiling of a big room. The supplemental lighting has parabolic reflectors to concentrate light into every square inch of the tank. They are designed for 12 inch wide tanks.

Toygrr,

That is a very nice light set. I'm looking for something similar and I emailed the company to see how long they are on sale. A very good price I might add.

mikellini
11/21/2007, 08:53 PM
But the fixture is 15" wide, how is that designed for a 12" tank?

cherubfish pair
11/21/2007, 09:56 PM
Because the reflectors are slightly angled-in towards the center of the tank.

well it is a bit wide, but its perfect, i mean, id rather have a t5/hqi fixture, but this is an awesome deal.

I ordered from aqua traders, they said at the last hour that it has dent and i need to wait 2 more weeks for a new stock...I said F**k it, i want my money back. I was planning on putting a hammer coral, or some polyps in it sooner, so i found one on ebay, a little shorter but my hood will cover it up, plus its the same wattage, lower price, and free shipping!! :D

Which animal are you talking about here?

Anyway, if something is getting too much light and the 250w and PC's are on seperate cords, try shortening up the photo period for the 250 by using a timer. Keep the PCs on for the whole light period, but on longer starting earlier and continuing later (than the 250). This will create a dawn/dusk effect.

thats what i been doin, but i was doin it wrong. had the MH on about 9-10 hours a day...i get home late so..

but lately i havnt had it on untill i get home at 5, then turn it off at 9 and hes doin fine. But by next weekend ill have a strip timer, but yeah, the LEDS in combo with the compacts are a great dusk/dawn effect. not as good as i want it. Im not sure what its called, but it looks like little flowers with green tips, not zoas, but they stay on the same rock in little holes, the polyps are like 1/4" wide and brown. But anyways i call it a flowerpot but hes doin good, the torch i had is ok, but he shrivels at night, scares me. I got another torch as well, clearish with white tips. But one of his heads is almost completely shriveled, with the exception on a couple tentacles that wiggle around. But the other head is flourishing. So i wanna take it out and remove it, but i dont wanna kill the other head.

im not sure what to dom kind of in a pickel. but my params are:
PH 8.0
Salinity 1.024
Nitrates 15 PPM
nitrites 0
Ammonia ?
Temp 78-80

i dont have a fuge yet, the smikkers working fine, and i feed them once a day (including syringe fed blenny :) )

oh i been meaning to ask you, is there a certail filter pad i can get to get rid of micro bubbles out of my tank? the skimmer makes quite a few, and i read on it, i need to let it break in by putting the cup up higher. But ive had it for about 2 weeks, soo...if you could help that'd be cool :P

So today i went to the LFS and got a pretty big and beautiful Hammer, who's now getting used to his new home. But hes healthy and only $50 so i scored. The guy also saved me a Giant (but still pretty small) Mushroom anemone with 2 little Sexy shrimp that host in it. I got that for about $50 also which i was hesitant about but i like supporting this small business and i regret nothing. I would hesitate on the overflow. It's for a sump, right? If this is just for the microbubbles, there are better ways to solve the problem. There are several Remora mods you can do and there are a lot of people willing to help on the diy forum. JMO

well id like to setup a fuge for copopods for the scooter blenny. But also to hide the heater, filter, protein skimmer...

you know just for a better overall look. can you send me a link to the remora mods ? or which DIY forum, nano, general DIY?

alright im on an epic quest! Im curious to see, but i still wanna set up a sump, i found a 137 gph @ 4ft/190 gph @ 2ft pump in my backyard...so ill use that, but i wanted to know, with a say CPR overflow, how does the syphon restart itself when the water gets too low then fills up again?

i have never used an overflow box.always have had my tanks drilled...but i believe that if setup properly then if the water level drops the overflow box retains its vacuum between the inside and outside box.i could be wrong tho.
good looking start though.i have always had a sump on my tanks.
1)hide all the ugly equipment out of sight.
2)increases total water volume(always a good thing)
3)allows you start a fudge

good luck and keep the pics coming.looks like you're on a good start!

The CPR overflow works with something called an Aqualifter Pump. It's a small diaphragm pump which sucks air/water out of the top or the weir to maintain the syphon. I have one and to be honest.. have had mixed results. The Aqualifter tends to clog up and this sometimes leads to water on the floor.

However, like most other reef tank equipment, if you maintain it and give it a good cleaning from time to time, you shouldn't have a problem. If you get one, make sure you get the small filter made for the pump. It's like $3 and will save you from mopping up the floor.

The think I like most about my sump (besides my fuge) is the auto topoff I have built. It's money in terms of lower maintenance and stability of the system. I build the sump out of a 10 gallon tank for about $30 using ideas from Melev's site.

Good luck. :)

Mahalamata thats why i need one, that plus to get icky microbubbles out of my tank.

Mokujin, thanks because ive been wondering about cpr overflows, but is the aqualifter necessary? the part i dont get is how with a syphon setup, how does it syphon more when the water level raises, pressure? And yeah im doing the same, 10g sump and taking melev's ideas :P i was gonna drill it, but hastily filled up the tank too soon :|...But i was thinking of setting up a temporary tank so i could drill my current one and gluing an overflow over the hole, not sure yet tho, wouldnt want to ruin the work ive done.

And scottydo, isnt he cool lookin? :D hes like less than an inch long, maybe 1cm...same with his sibling.

I believe that the coral you've labeled as a 'white torch' is in fact a frogspawn coral. And the 'flowerpot' coral looks like a blastomussa to me, but hey, I could be wrong...

Looks great with some coral in there. I bet it's even better in person. Euphyllia corals are pretty much my favourite... keep up the good work, and the posts!

You have got a great little setup here. There are a few things that I would like to submit my $0.02 on.

>1. On your photographs, I can tell that you are using the flash on most of them. This is going to significantly wash out the colors in the corals and fish. The wave lengths of light that the corals emitt, is almost like, 'delicate'. And the powerful camera flash destroys those wave lengths and doesn't allow them to reach the lens of the camera. So what I would recommend doing, is to stop using the flash, and if you aren't all ready, start using a tripod. This will give more stable pics when not using the flash.

>2. I hope that you are constantly stocked up on live foods, because that Scooter, feeds primarily on small shellfish living amongst the rock work. And this needs to be supplemented in the home aquarium with at least live brine shrimp.

Hope that helps;)

Again, great looking tank!

well the white torch isn't actually "White Torch" its just a white colored torch coral, i dont think its frogspawn because its usually a green color like the other torch i have, but it also has the frogspawn shaped tenticles...so im unsure as well. And im posative that the "Flower Pot" is an "Alveopora" google image search it, trust me its the same, but thanks for mentioning that.

Oh and i did some reasearch, is the AquaC Remora a bad skimmer? because it was recomended to me by like 3 people, and people say its ineffeicient, but i think its alright, i get a tea colored to a dark colored skimmate every 1-2 days. But i think ill mod it to fit in my sump when i make it, maybe attach a mag drive on it xD.

Again, great looking tank! Oh i know, i wasnt prepared at all, using my friend's digital camera xD i need to charge my film one. On a couple of pics i didn't use the flash, but ill stop using it..And i didn't know about the light thing, so thanks! And the scooter blenny is doing good on the frozen brine shrimp, its a little extra work, but i syringe feed him, he comes straight to my hand when i stick the syringe in the tank now xD. But when i get my fuge/sump setup then ill stok it with bottled copopods and hope they go into the tank. Thanks for the suggestions tho!

The Remora is a goog skimmer. I had the nano version on my sump for my 10 gallon. No mods to get it to fit. You shouldn't have to mod yours to fit.

I had mine set up for the skimmer's output to empty on the drip-plate and through the bio-balls which eliminated the microbubbles.

Don't get bottled pods from oceanpods.com. Can't remember what I paid, it's been awhile, it was a very small bottle and I could only see about four pods and they were about the size of the period at the end of this sentence.

lol that sucks man, i was gonna buy some from the LFS hes very trustworthy, likes my mother and I (gives us discounts) plus theyre in a clear bottle, like 200 for 20 bucks. Pricy but worth it. Oh and i dont have problems with fitting it on the back, just the bubbles, but you gave me an idea, what if i put bioballs at the bottom of the skimmer, you know right at the bottom of the divider? Ill try it when it goes lights out so i dont interrupt the light cycle.

God damned this MacBook...cant type $#!t...

Ok, ill think about it. I did get my paycheck, so i've got some money at hand. Sorry for all the questions xD Oh i also got a MAG5 pump from my work, so im set. Though id rather just buy the CPR because i plan on making a fuge with either a 20high or a 10g, with acrylic plates of course.

Figure out the prices of shipping and ill get back to you!
