When installing a union, which part goes on the flow side the male threaded section or the female ring section? TIA

I honestly don't think it should make any difference. If it did, I would think that there would be an indication on the union like they have on the check valves. Let's see what others have to say.

It doesn't matter which direction you mount it. If you are mounting it on a vertical run I would put the female end on top. That way when you take it loose it will stay in place and you won't have to slide it back up to re-connect it.
