Just running my lights on my aquarium too see how hot it is running with the glass top on and the black back pieace off.

My tank after 5 hrs has moved from 78.5 to 80.5 I planned to run the MH light for 8 hrs.

I know people run topless but I wanted to see how it ran this way no LR in it yet just saltwater and sand.

Id like to leave the top on because I have a 3 yr old and we all know how they are.

I may have to do the egg crate trick if it runs too hot.

so what is the ideal temp without trying to cook your fish/corals?

My cube is 83.5 right now with 250w MH 6" above it. My fans have been ordered, and there seem to be no ill effects.

My jbj nano 28g hqi hit about 87.5 before I started running a fan. Now it keeps steady at 80.5.

My AP12-70hqi runs at 82 degree constant with glass top on and lights. At nite it drops to 80 degree gradually. I have a mj900 in sump exhaust and two Koralia Nanos in the tank. My heater is set at 77 degrees just for emergency. I keep the temp in the room at 60 degrees vacant and 72 degrees when i'm home.

What other equipment are u running in the tank and sump???

I have a 24" 130 watt dual fixture on my 10 gallon and it was hitting almost 83 during the day and down to 78 at night. For corals and stuff I think that is a bit too much of temp. change every day but it didn't seem to bother anything else too too much.
However, now that the weather is cooler it has been staying at about 78.

Just an idea my friend recommended, you can freeze bags of water and just drop them in your tank when needed during the day.
