When I had my tank all set up they made a floating refugium and put mud in it. My question is why mud vs other methods I hear about? Also can I have something growing in it? Mud with a light on it seems pointless to me
I'd think cheato would be fine. Cheato is rootless, simply floats and spins in the current, serves as home for microlife, and produces a lot of oxygen.
I think the idea behind the mud is bacteria and microlife. SHouldn't be harmed by cheato. I use sand, myself.

No special reason to use "mud" in the display or for that matter your refugium. It is just fine silt and had no proven benefits over small grained live sand.
I like to use sugar sized aragonite in a fuge as it provides a good habitat for the sand bed's population. Using "mud" is not all that bad unless you expect a Miracle.
