Just bringing a 90 gallon reef tank up and would like suggestions as to the best way to clean my sump's cloth filter bag, for the lack of a better discription.

Plus is it normal for the protein skimmer's collection top to be stained from junk it removes from the water? Thanks Calabashman

I haven't been in the hobby too long, but the neck of my skimmer cup has yellowed a bit. I have a filter bag on the discharge from my overflow and I clean it every two to three days. I remove it and clean it in the sink and rinse it with RO/DI water.

Yellow stain, yes.

filter bags. i wash in washer, HOT water. then, turn inside out, wash again with a little bleach and HOT water. Last, wash again with just plain HOT water. Air dry them to allow chlorine time to evap. Then you're good to go.

i picked this technique up from someone else on RC ad it hasn't failed me yet. I have 4 bags, change them every 3-4 days (ok, sometimes 7). When i'm on my last one, I wash the other 3.

Thanks for your reply. Very helpful information. Wasn't sure I could wash it in fresh water & bleach.

Yeah, I was skeptical myself, but works like a champ.
