You should never drill a tank with water in it, if you can't empty it, get an HOB overflow box.

Get a 20+ gallon tub from the hardward store and transfer the contents of the tank to that. Then have a pro drill your tank.

First and foremost, can that glass tank handle being drilled into?

it sounds like i have to use a overflow box, it is not reliable, although the tank just 20G, still enough to flood the floor.....

thinking to try it by a glass cutter than tap down the broken edge.
no one try that. otherwise, as you guys suggested buy a bigger container then make transfer.

how big you think the hole should be? for 20G

It doesnt have to flood the floor! Just make sure that the water that will drain out of your tank can all be held by your sump. If you buy a decent overflow, it won't lose its syphon on a power cut so will start automatically. My mum complains of the noise of my return pump at night so my sump only runs during the day, and it has yet to overflow or run dry!

Yes a drilled tank is ideal (IMO), but a decent overflow really isnt that bad!
