Closed loop is alot easier than it sounds, it basically just a manner of creating circulation in our tanks using a circulation pump instead of powerheads, and unlike a sump, which relies on gravity, a closed loop will have the intake for the pump in the tank instead of in a overflow box. A basic closed loop could be as simply as having a couple bulkheads in the back of the tank, beneath water level and plumbed to a simple external pump. Bottom line, you don't have powerheads IN the tank looking all gaudy and ugly.

Thats it. No wonder everyone keeps telling me to switch.

There are also downsides with closed loops. 1. you have more holes in your tank that can crack. 2. More than likely it will cost more to run (uses more power) 3. More pipes that could bust or leak and drain the whole tank in a few min.
