Hello,
Any advices on the best kind of protein skimmer to buy for a 168 gallon tank with medium bioload. I am planning to spend around $200.
I have been reading around but still can't figure out which one to go with!
Thanks much!

not gonna get a good one for a 168 gal. tank for 200. but your best bet would be to check out DAS and octopus skimmers. but even with those being a good cheaper brand your looking at 400-500

oh sorry didn't see the HOB part. not sure to many HOB skimmers can handle that size tank. maybe a coralife.
but IMO you prob. would be best to have an external skimmer on that size tank

I've had the Ramora-C HOB for about 3 years and I'm very pleased. I run a MaxiJet pump.
Just my opinion but I wouldn't put a dollar limit on a skimmer system. It's better to get the properly matched skimmer that's based on the needs of your tank vs. trying to save a few clams and not get the right setup. That could end up costing you more clams in the long run.
