I am not sure if I want to hang the hood or rest it on the tank. It is a 30G 36x12x16. I have not seen any DIY threads on Making a hood and would like some ideas. The light I am putting in are 4x39w Icecap. If you have a link pass it on or if you have any suggestions let me know.

Just go to the reef discussion threads and look at various build threads. From looking at builds you'll get nice ideas and eventually come up with a design you like.
Just be aware that the page splits in most of those threads are annoying.

Check with checkinhawk and chrismhasse. They both built nice hoods recently.

Witelytr, it all depends on what look you like... I have a custom canopy that rests on the tank and I love the look of it... You will also run in to the problem that a hood that rests on the tank that is 36" and lights that are 35.5" doesnt leave much room for stability... I made my hood an inch bigger than the tank so I could accomodate the T5`s...

Here is a pic before I changed out the reflectors!!

I want something open that rests on the tank. e.g. no door no top. I have something in mind and saw it on a members tank. I just want to see how a thread would look like since I have not built anything with wood before. If any of you have any ideas or designs I'd appreciate it.

take a pic and post of your tank and where it is. How nice to you want it?

witelytr - here's a frame that I'm working on. All it needs is skinned and decide on the door on the front. This fits right on top of the tank and the skin is what holds it in place.

Oh - BTW this is for a large tank (240g) but it gives you a starting point. This frame is very easy to make and is a great starting point.

here is a pic of my hood just like above build the frame and the skin will overlap the tank covering the rim this ones set for halides but you could make one with outh the top and use some kinda crossbars to mount your lights

I have got to give credit to "dhnguyen" As soon as I saw his thread last week I was so glad that there was a template that I could work off of.

My rendition is smaller and closed on top but this will be cooled by 2 $8 double ball bearing/ multi-speed/ 2700 RPM fans. One on the right for intake and one on the left for output. Ballasts are on the rear piece of 2x1 across the upper back.

Dude... That's a sweet canopy you've built. Now all that's left is to paint it :)
