Well, I suppose I'll take it over to one of my Jeep sites...

Thanks for the pity reply!

Should work, but beware of water traveling down electrical lines to the distributor cap---had a vented VW superbeetle that used to leave me in the lurch every time it rained, until I figured that out....
But it looks neat. There may be some sort of internal shield you can get that will accept the air and reject the rain.

My dream has finally come true... Jeepin advice from the immortal C J Cherryh! Thanks... I thought of that too (great minds...) I located them to water wouldn't cause a problem and unless I drive backwards at about 50, there shouldn't be any concern.

What's the condition of your cooling system?

I went through three radiators and two waterpumps in my JGC in about 3 years (40k miles or so.) The second time the rad died, it managed to peg the temp so hot that the #1 piston bit the dust. Of course, since the rad has a tranny oil cooler built in to it, they're NOT cheap! :(

What year is the Jeep? Years 1998-2000 had trouble with cooling. I know I had one and researched it and found things to do and it all worked out after I changed the head. I remember it was something to do with the casting of the head. the guys over at Pirate4x4 should be able to help you out.

FWIW, mine was a 97. It's interesting to hear that 98-00 had a bad rep for head problems, since the engine had basically been unchanged for half a century at that point. When my #1 cylinder died, I put a junkyard engine from a 98 in, and had no problems.

No they changed the engine in 1998 on the grand no distributor had coils on every spark plug. 1999 all the 4.0's had it. so they redesigned the head

Ok, maybe I'm confused. I knew they went to coilpacks, but what exactly changed about the head? The distributor wasn't on the cams or anything, and the coilpacks just clipped over the plugs, so why did they change the head casting?

To bolt the pack down they had to put mounts on the head. So they recast the head. I remember the bare new head weighing more than the old head assembled.

Huh. I never knew that. So I guess it wasn't a 98 engine I put in mine. :D

Edit: Here's the head from my dead 97 motor:

And the #1 piston:

I keep it on my desk as a reminder. Right next to it are some bent valves from a frankenstein turbocharged VW engine I managed to kill right around that same timeframe. :D
