Can the screws on a mag be releasing a metal contamination ?

yes, I had issues with them leaching, I took the pump out and covered each screw with a big gob of silione and it solved my issues.

(The screws on mine turned from silver to black and I had issues with keeping new additions alive to the tank)

Replace them with Nylon or stainless screws
