I know a few of you have bought them for a skimmer pumps. I am thinking of using one for a return pump.

can then be plumed external? From the manual, it seems they are only submersible.

THose of you who own them, any way to plumb them external?

no, not unless you make a custom volute, or use hose clamps on the barb fittings... still, I would just use a custom volute.

thanks hahn. I am looking at the 600 for a return pump. I only need about 180 gallons going to my tank and would divert the rest of the the flow to a remote deep sand bed.

the 600 does not have the electronic contol like the larger pumps. Any idea what the pF is? low heat input in addition to low wattage is key for me. 32 watts looks great for 600 gph, compared to my next choice of an Eheim 1260. I want to be sure it is not too good to be true.

Oh, well, let me add this then as well. As far as return pumps go, these are not good choices. They are low-wattage, low-pressure pumps. The return distance would kill their output. I doubt a 600 would even work.

I would suggest an Oceanrunner 3500/2500 instead... maybe even over the eheim since they have jumped up in price so much recently.

that is a good point. I couldnt find a head pressure curve.

Dont the OR's generate quite a bit more heat than eheims??

Look at the wattage of the two pumps. The OR's are lower wattage, which means they generate less heat. Of course, I'm only going on the spec wattage, which should be pretty close to the actual wattage.

I do see the wattage is much less comparing the 2500 and about the same for the 3500 but I believe the heat dumped to the water is as much a function of power factor as watts.

If the PF is lower on the OR and the watts are same, the OR will heat the water more. I doubt the 38 watt 2500 would dump more heat than the 1260, but it will push less water at 3 ft.

It would be great if someone could post watt and PF values for the OR's and eheims. probably needs to be new thread.

I would like to know this as well as I'm looking into buying an internal return pump.

I posted those figures here on RC like 2 years ago... dont even know where or what they are. The OR does have a lower wattage though... I remember that.
