I live in Long Beach California about 15 min from the beach lets say i was to go down to the beach and fill a 50 gal drum up with saltwater... now what would I have to do to make this water useable? (man thats really bad that we have to treat real ocean water befor we could use it in a tank) but what would you folks recomed by filtering it? It would save me a ton of money and may be better in the tank?

I don't think it would be a good idea. It's pretty polluted out there. I used to live in Long Beach too. JMO....

I would not use ocean water unless it was from at least a mile off shore.

It would probable be allot cheaper in the long run to spend the extra and buy instant ocean and mix your own water. Everything I have read on using ocean water is bad. If something dies in your tank its probably going to cost more to replace it then you would have saved on the salt mix. You are right its pretty bad you would have to treat ocean water to use it in your tank.
