I use an Aquacontroller Jr for my lighting schedule. I think a controller is going to be the best bet. I've also been looking into these guys: http://www.chrontrol.com/
These would be even better than the aquacontroller in some cases because you can schedule things to turn on/off at specific dates of the year.

Invest in a controller if you are serious about the hobby (ACjr, ACIII, Reefkeeper, etc...)
Whatever money that you spend on light timers, and you will probably need several to run a reef tank, could have been the money saved toward a controller.
Hands down the best investment for a reef.

Controller for hundreds of dollars or a simple mechanical dial timer from the hardware store for under 10 that serves pretty much the same fuction with regards to lights.

Yeah, except I got mine for $35 on eBay. I haven't set it up yet, but I'll post about it when I do so. Also, I must say that most mechanical timers I've bought have seized up on me or slowed down to some extent so I kinda got tired of those. I could have bought digital timers sure, but this puts it all together and can control 4 circuits very accurately.
