Great looking banner!!

I would love to be there, but will have to be at work that day. I would like to encourage everyone attending to bring some of their nicest coral frags to share with the other members of SLASH....what comes around goes around.

I always trade with stupidsreef, and his neighbor rich, i don't think i every charged anyone money for coral frags yet but mine are all softies, polyps, mushrooms, few lps. If anyone has any bring some different colored leathers, would like some yellow, purple, or red softies, and different colored zoos(small frags of a few polyps so i can spread out for multiple colonies in tanks. Also lookin for easy lps corals already have frogspawn and hammer coral, would like some candy cane, or galaxy coral, and if anyone out there has some stomatella snails.

Ok i think thats it for what i'm lookin for.

Is this a good thing to go to if I'm just looking to buy new stuff for my tank but have nothing to offer?

Baron
09/18/2007, 12:18 PM
If by new stuff you mean coral frags the answer is YES!! The last few have had some really nice corals that could be purchased and there was some good trading happening also.

There was also even a couple clams I believe.

JxMetal

I'll be there. Don't know what to bring yet though.

Here's what I'm considering fragging -

I will make this one, I figure to have around 200+ frags sps and zoos. How do people set up for something like this to control temp and keeping your corals alive and healty? Should I start making a traveling frag tank?

Personally, I don't think selling should be allowed...it is called a SWAP as a way for fellow hobbyist to trade corals. Selling is very contrary to what FRAG SWAPS are about.

If you have some corals you want to trade, by all means trade them, if you want to sell them, use the LFS or other means, IMHO.

Jarob
10/05/2007, 01:11 PM
I like that you can buy them there personally. Being new to this while scene it gives me a chance to get some frags cheaper than LFS's since I dont have any of my own to swap.

Okay, but what about someone who has a tank FULL of sps and not really looking to add many more corals to the tank because of limited room. Sure I could go to a LFS and sell them for $10-$15 a frag, but then the hobbiest ends up paying $35+ Craigs corals up at Beltds are $69!!! I dont think they would be that at a swap.

Trading will be done I am sure, but if I bring just 3 frags of each of my corals, I would have over 100 frags, of which I dont need 100 new frags for my tank.

While I understand what you are saying Dave, I really think that would limit participation and quality and quantity of corals going to other reefers

Just my 2 cents

Nanook
10/05/2007, 10:35 PM
I hear what you are saying too, Clark...good point. Just would be nice for people to be able to take some up and get some in trade as well without it turning into a "sales-only" event. Whatever everyone does is OK with me, I won't be there and probably shouldn't have commented.

I don't have any thing to trade either. I'm trying to set up two new nano's. If you trade only you have just alienated anyone who is just starting tanks, and thats one thing I really like about the hobby is everyone I've ever met is always helpful and willing to help. Don't shut out the little guys.

I'm not completely against selling at swaps, especially to newbies who don't yet have anything to trade. However, I think the general concept of a swap (particularly a small one like SLASH's)should be what Nanook suggested. More trading (or freebies) than selling. I hate going to a large swap and paying LFS or online prices for a coral that been closed up in a bag all morning and I can't even see.

If I make it (and I'm going to try), I plan on setting up and doing trades only for the first hour or so and then open up what's left for sale (cheap $5-10 tops). I also plan on having quite a few donor corals which I'll post on the SLASH Forum so that members can get dibs first.

Try not to take this as a rant, it's just my opinion but I don't think small local club swaps should be a place to make money. If the club decides to take the swap to the next level and bring in online and out-of-state dealers well that's a different story but I like the small local vibe where we're all trying to have fun, help each other out, and make this hobby a little cheaper for the next guy.

Thanks again to everyone who is working so hard to put this thing together, I (and I'm sure many others) appreciate the hard work and dedication

Membership is not a requirement.

Just show up and have a good time.

stlouisguy
10/10/2007, 08:48 PM
Nick, you make some very good points. I plan to try and swap or some stuff I am looking for before I sell, or I will swap while I sell. As far as frag prices, I will be between $10 to $25. While that may seem high, the $25 frags will be either large or rare coloration. The same frags would be online for $50+

I think a good balance needs to be set. No price is set in stone, and the more someone buys the cheaper it gets.

I do think though the the more people we can get to bring frags and sell/swap is what will dive this to the next level of having people come from out of the area. I really dont want to keep it small as the larger it gets, the more differant frags appear

Looking forward to it!!

i just hope clark and i arent the only ones that are selling

last time i was the only one

Reefer Wannabe
10/10/2007, 10:33 PM
I'll be selling about 7 or 8 frags, compared to the 300 or so between the 2 of you. :D

I personally like to buy. Unfortunately, trading typically only works for people who have the "same level" of frags. If you're looking to "move up" as I am, trading doesn't work. Chad or Clark probably won't care about my finger leather or more common zoos, but someone who wants cheap frags to fill up their tank will. I'll spend every dime I make from selling on frags at the swap, so it's as good as trading. I've never spent anything close to LFS prices at the swap, and I've been able to buy some of my favorite pieces there. Just my 2 cents.

capncapo
10/10/2007, 11:21 PM
Personally, whatever works is good for me.

I like for folks to have a good time whether they're buying, selling, trading or just looking. Isn't that what it's all about?

I think that folks expect to see frags bought, sold and traded.

I like the idea of reefers helping reefers with free items too and anyone who wishes to do so can use the Donor program to do that at any time. No need to wait for a fragswap.

SOunds cool. WHat do most people use to transport frags?Buckets?

Also, does this place require I wear a moose hat?

capncapo
10/15/2007, 12:18 AM
Most folks bag them up like the LFSs do and transport them in a cooler.

Moose hats are typically optional but in your case we could make it mandatory.:D If you don't already have a moose hat they will be available at the hall for $99.99 plus handling.:eek1:

I was mentioned that you might be looking for another meeting location for future swaps? We use Greenfelder REc Center for our family xmas partys. I don't know what size room is needed but they have a kitchen and meeting room for $25 an hour.

I can check into it for next year if you like.
