I have about 170 lbs od dead rock from an old tank. The pieces are big and look great. I dont want to buy new live rock, so how do I go about making it Live again?

just drop it in water. all live rock is, is the bacteria and they'll colonize the surface of/in the rock in a short time. the bugs/critters/worms/coralline/etc... are just extras and you can get those with a few lbs of new rock or some GARF Grunge.

Get a few chunks of live rock and mix in with the dead, a few months....BOOM!

set your rock up the way you want it and get some small pieces of live rubble rock and place them in differant areas of the rock. I.E. spread around and the rock will be seeded from the smaller pieces in a few months. use some purple up and it should give it a boost. Remember the more pieces of live you use the better the growth !!

Make sure you use a good skimmer and lots of water changes, too.

I also agree with clavery, a good skimmer is a must on all aquariums

Is a skimmer recommended for a tank just with live/base rock? What about a filter, should a skimmer take its place?
