Sorry ..... I wanted to look this up w/the "search" function, although it is always too busy when I seem to need it . Also, I didn't know this particular forum had its "own" search function ..... that is great!!

I don't know how many times this has been discussed, but has anyone figured out the cost of making their own SW? How much would it be per gallon?? I just stopped at a LFS during lunch to pick up 15 gal and @ .90/gal the price came to $13.50 !!

Doesn't that seem like a lot of money ?? What are the rest of you paying and what kind do you buy: ocean, ready-made from salt mix, or make your own?

If this is one of those threads that appears weekly, I will do a search in the middle of the night one of these days; I just would like to see a good comparison.

Thanks
:)

I pickup about 100g of NSW from UCSB for free. Cost of gas around $30, so $30/100g=.30 p/gal for the real stuff, nothing artificial.

Another reason is my water rates are high and when factoring the 4:1 waste from RO/DI it would be the same or more than picking up NSW.

Scripps is another choice for FREE NSW.

didn't calculate the wear and tear or the resell value on your car.

What kind of water are you buying @ .90 cent a gallon?
Better be Tropic Marine pro mix water.

Nor the better quality of NSW.

Most cars today can run to 200K easily and with tune-ups 80k-100k and oil changes 7k.

You need to factor in the cost of the RO/DI maintenance which will vary quite a bit based on your source water. If your source has high turbidity you'll have to replace the sediment filters more often. If your source has high chlorine levels you'll burn through the carbon. If your source is high in TDS the RO will remove some, but the DI cartridge will be spent faster.

For me with mid-grade salt my cost is about 35¢ per gallon plus the time I have invested messing with the RO/DI more often and the time to mix it. So all total I'd say about $1.00 per gallon. :)

Wow ..... you drive from Victorville to UCSB?? And that's a lot of water!! Hopefully you share it with others and they help pay for part of your gas money.

Hey !!!! Is Manhattan Beach on your way home??? I would pay "more" than my share for your gas $$.

The Instant Ocean salt costs $15 /bag
If one bag can make 50 US Gal, then 15 divided by 50 is 0.30 per US gal.

You have to factor in the cost of RO/DI cartridges, electricity required for mixing, the Brute trashcan, and the water itself.

An ideal system would be to first collect rainwater, then boil it, run it through RO/DI, then use it in your tank. During water changes, run the water through a Desalination system, boil the water, then use it for drinking. The salt that was removed can be reused in your tank.
