i'm looking at getting a used 300gal acrylic tank but i'm concerned about the thickness. Its made up of all 1/2" acrylic. The last large acrylic tank I had (240gal), had thicker pieces and a lot more top bracing too. This one has 2 very large openings and the bracing is maybe 3" around all the edges and one piece for the center brace. The tank is approx 96" x 32 wide x 23 high.

Does the 1/2" sound ok?

IMHO, a flood waiting to happen.

I have a 320g Clarity plus tank 96x24x32 (LxWxH) and it is made entirely out of 1/2" acrylic it has been set up for about 11yrs and never once had a problem with it. A buddy of mine also ordered an 300g 96x30x24 it was made out of 1/2" as well and he has since had no problems and this was not even 2 yrs ago. Personally 1/2" will be fine for the dimensions you are talking about, if it were 30" high than for bowing reasons only I would want it made at least with 5/8" but that's just my opinion from my experience.

1/2" is fine for tanks up to 24" tall after that 3/4" up to 30" tall then 1".

Kevin

Thanks for the feedback.

don't do 1/2" thick..not worth it, Just for a little more and you could have a 3/4" thick Mine is a 240 euro brace with two opening and I did 3/4". Never have to worried about flood with my tank.

it won't be "just a little more". its used and one hell of a deal.

Its only a hell of a deal if nothing happens to the tank:rolleye1:

Its a tough call. James at Envision Acrylics (who has built many tanks for people on RC) would be a great person to talk to about it.

He is currently looking at building two large sumps for me and a tank. The sumps are 1/2 inch, but the Tank 96 x 36 x 32 we decided to use 1" for safety factors and so the tank doesn't bow over time.

Hope this helps,

Ken
