mysis shrimp usually help fatten them up some. also try putting a little romaine up with his nori to help.

Nori is the dry seaweed sheets that they roll sushi rolls with. Most any large grocery store or asian market will have it.

Don't use romaine lettuce. They can't digest it...

Agree with Peter. The more nori you have available for grazing, the better. Also, a good flaked food for herbivores is better than mysid or frozen foods. They are mostly water.

wow first i have heard of them not being able to digest it. I have a naso tang I got from a fellow reefer who only feed him nori and romaine. He was over 6 yrs old when I got him and I have had him 2 yrs. Hes over a foot long and as beautiful as they come. Guess hes just been lucky his whole like.

Sorry, let me be more specific. It is unlikely that tangs can digest cellulose. This is why it is recommended you freeze or boil terrestrial greens prior to feeding them to tangs. These processes break down the cellulose, allowing a better chance at extracting any nutrients. At best they may derive a small amount of nutrients from romaine. At worst, it is shooting through their system, possibly taking nutrients from other foods with it....

go to the seafood department and they should have what is called seaweed wraps. People use the seaweed to roll up sushi. Whever they have sushi in the store it should be right around there. Hope this helps.

i like feeding variety. i rotate (randomly) between brown, red, green, and purple packaged seaweed from twolittlefishes (julian sprung - the purple, green, and red) and ocean nutrition (the brown). i also feed frozen mysis, formula 1 & 2 pellets, and rod's food.

I feed 2x/day thawed frozen mysis with Selcon & garlic. I also feed 2x/day nori sheet.

I definately had issues with feeding romaine to my tangs, even after freezing it. the fish did not digest it, which means little to no nutritional value. I sometimes feed them frozen broccoli and spinach, however i question their nutritional value also. Mysis and pankton are always good, along with spiriluna flake.

Make sure the nori is unseasoned..."just plain Nori" no additives!

At the bottom of this webpage are seaweed sheets (nori) appropriate for tangs:

Yeah, and I wouldn't get the "roasted" stuff either...

Where are you getting unroasted nori?
They roast the nori to get the moisture out. It needs to be dry, or it goes bad. That's why they have the silica gel packs in with the nori to keep it dry.

I didn't know roasted = dried. Mine is just labeled dried. If roasted means the same thing, then nevermind what I said :)

Just asking because I've never heard of non roasted nori. The roasting is a quick drying process to keep all the goodness in, similar to flash freezing.

I guess I just associated roasting with spices and olive oil :D
