That's probably the nicest 92 corner I have seen. Including my own. Can't wait to see some pics of it up and running. Well thought out...

That makes my 92 corner look like something from the 80s. By the way the stand and canopy are beautiful. I can't wait to see it running.

Thanks for the comments guys. I left the hobby for about 2 years while I was moving, saved some money, planned like crazy, and tried to do things right this time. I'm sure I forgot something, but oh well :)

The stand and canopy were the costliest items, by far.

Hey,
That tank looks very nice. I love to see a tank that someone took the time to make the wiring and everything look perfect. I just bought a 92 and will start the upgrade withing the next few weeks.

Are those streams on the side walls or did you drill? I drilled my 37g tank, but dont think I am going to drill my 92, instead my CL will be running in the canopy. The cost of the error can be very expensive if I cracked the new tank. :)

What is the inside height of your stand?

Oh, one other question, did you buy the AGA overflow kit, or did you make your own?

Thank you joey, I will. The stand and canopy were made by BRI Aquatic Cabinets in Jacksonville, Florida.

Thanks for your comments Husky_1. Those are a pair of Vortechs, no drilling required! http://www.ecotechmarine.com/

Inside clearance is 32". Stand is 34" high (36.5" with the trim).

Oh, one other question, did you buy the AGA overflow kit, or did you make your own?

I bought the All-Glass Megaflow Accessory Kit. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=12078&Ntt=megaflow&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&N=2004&Nty=1

Sorry for the questions, but I am just trying to get ideas.

Where did you mount those ballasts? And is that a heat sync for the ballasts? If so where did you get it?

Thanks,

No problem. The ballasts (2) are Icecap 660s. They are mounted on the outside of the canopy, left side (so you can't see them when you come in through the door). The metal plate is indeed a heat sink and it comes with the Icecap ballast, no extra charge.

**Update**

I did a leak test last night, and so far so good. If there are no leaks, I should have all the water in by tonight. I'll post more pics when I get home later.

I'm also working on an equipment list for anyone that might be interested, which I'll post soon. Thanks for all your comments.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

Here's my Equipment List for those who may be interested:

Tank: All-Glass 92 gallon corner “reef-ready” (with corner overflow). Megaflow accessory kit.

Stand and Canopy: BRI Aquatic Cabinets (Jacksonville, FL)

Lighting: 4 x 36” (39 watt) T5s HO and 4 x 24” (24 watt) T5s HO, each (over)driven by an Icecap 660 ballast. Combination of blue plus, aquasun and super actinic bulbs (thanks to Grim for the bulb selection). Two (2) white LED lunar moonlights. 18 watt PC fixture on refugium.

Sump/Refugium: ADHI Model 20
Return Pump: Eheim 1260
Additional Circulation: Two (2) Vortech Propeller Pumps, with Ecotech battery backup on one.

Protein Skimmer: Tunze 9010, configured for in-sump use.
UV Sterilizer: AquaC Classic, 25 watt, running inline on return line.

RO/DI Filter (not pictured): Kent Marine Deluxe Hi-S Maxxima, 60 GPD.

Misc: Pinpoint wireless water thermometer / Pinpoint PH monitor / Five (5) Intermatic digital outdoor timers to control the two Icecap ballasts, moonlights/refugium light, skimmer/UV filter, and one Vortech/sump fan.

The open space in the stand on the left is for a calcium reactor OR a 2-part auto-dosing setup (using a Litermeter III), I haven't decided yet. Any suggestions?

wow great looking setup!

I just started a 92 about a month ago and wanted to setup a new sump but was scared that the Eheim 1260 i had from my old setup would not be powerful enough on this tank. how do you think it does with that much head?
have you tried it with and w/o the UV? it seems like that would be too much for the pump to handle.

im kind of in shock that you managed to fit all those T5's in there lol

Yea, that was pretty slick how you were able to squeeze in 8 bulbs. I was able to get decent growth for my corals with 4 bulbs. With 8 bulbs, it should look sweet.

I am curious why you didn't go with a controller instead of all the separate timers and meters.

Thanks Ahoy. The Eheim 1260 is doing fine so far. The overflow in the corner is only rated for 400 gph, I believe, so I figured a 1260 would be enough with the added head from the UV.

Also, I purposefully went with the 1260 instead of, say, the 1262 because I only wanted 3-5 times turnover in the tank, so as to avoid microbubbles. The main circulation will be handled by the 2 vortechs. The vortechs, by the way, are performing beautifully. When throttled under 50%, they are really quiet.

Lol, I still have no idea how I managed to fit 8 bulbs in there. Hope they get along, because they are tight, that's for sure :) I was concerned I would have dark spots, but I honestly can't see any with 8 bulbs.

As for why I didn't go with a controller... mainly because of cost. The cost of the stand and canopy killed my wallet, so I had to skimp somewhere! The 5 timers, temperature and PH meter together were still way cheaper than a good controller.

thats some good news, ill will hopefully be installing the 20H sump/fuge sometime this week with the 1260 after i finish with one more baffle and get a few PVC parts.

right now the main pump is an Iwaki wmd-40rlt and its noisy plus i think its the reason for the microbubbles, so hopefully the 1260 and the new sump will help eliminate this problem like you said

Wow guys, thank you for all of the nice comments. The stand and canopy took about 3 months to be built/delivered, and with nothing else to do, I spent that time planning the lighting set-up and the inside of the sump! The tank is in a working office/den, so everything needed to fit inside the canopy and the stand. Corner tanks are such a pain, but it was a fun challenge to get everything to fit.

Luckily, I found some very compact, yet great equipment, like the ADHI sump/refugium combo and the Tunze 9010. The Tunze specially, wow what a great performing skimmer in such a compact package. I'm still amazed at how small it is.

Once the planning was done, it took about a week to put it together. Ya know, measure thrice, cut once...

Sooo... are reactors still the "hot" thing or is popular opinion back to dosing 2-part? See, there's this little spot on the left in the stand that can use some more equipment! :)

Do you already have an Auto Top off into the sump? If not, I would use that room for a 5 gallon tank/bucket to top off fresh water. this way the salinity level stays very stable which is very important.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was thinking about buying this 22 quart (~5.5 gallon) square container to hold the top-off water:
http://bellsouthpwp2.net/j/a/jaaz/6566p.jpg
http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/variant.asp?catalog%5Fname=USPlastic&category%5Fname=29162&product%5Fid=18445&variant%5Fid=6572

Anyone happen to use one of these?

I would then buy b-ionic 2-part solution gallon jugs -- or go with Kong's suggestion and make my own. I could get everything into the sump with a Litermeter III, an extra pump and a water-top-off module.

The Litermeter III and the extra pumps are really expensive though... are they worth it?

mix up the two part yourself, its so easy, the only thing you have to go out of your way for is the calcium, which you can buy a 50lb bag at pinch a penny for like $32 i think it was and it will last you for a looong time. so far ive barely put a dent in my bag.

the baking soda and epsom salt for magnesium can be found at publix or winn dixie. if you want the mag flake also, you can buy some online from two part solution dot com

it really beats paying $20 or whatever it is for two little bottles of c balance or b ionic that you can empty out in a month or less when you can get everything in bulk and do the same thing

Thanks Ahoy. So, all I really need is some Dowflake and Baking Soda for the 2-part http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php ... amazing.

From that article, it doesn't seem like Magnesium is dosed too often (In my past reef, I dosed 2-part, but not Mag). I wonder if it's even worth making your own, when you can buy a Mag additive for relatively cheap... about $10 for a kilogram: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4787&Ntt=magnesium&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=0&Nty=1

Hi CaptNemo. It will be a mixed reef. Given the shape of the tank, I will be trying to replicate a pacific lagoon reef. That is, I plan on placing live rock along the perimeter of the right and left back walls and in front of the overflow, leaving a sandy area in the middle.

As for fish, I haven't settled on the list, but ideally I'd love a RBTA and a pair of mated clowns, a Purple Tang (my favorite fish), and perhaps a few anthias or wrasses. I also love eels, so perhaps I might even replace some of the fish above with a snowflake or zebra eel...

The ATO will be a nice thing to fit into that spot. I use a peristaltic pump to deliver limewater into the sump during the night that keeps water level stable. I travel a lot, so I need something that is reliable. Now I can be gone for a couple of weeks and not worry about anything.

Barely.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc283/miamijaaz/KidsandLeFishTankAgain019.jpg

The 10 gallon brute will make the almost daily chore of replacing evaporated water to a 7-10 day task, depending on the time of year. BUT it takes pretty much all of the space that's left. I barely have any space left for the 2-part jugs, although there's space right behind the brute trash can for 2 half-gallon (or less) containers for the 2-part. It won't take a week to go through that much 2-part, so perhaps I'm business.

What do you guys think, does it take too much space to be worth it?

Pacific, I've had the live rock in there since Saturday morning @ 10:00 am. I've done a 100% water change each day, mostly because of the smell. It's in the low 90s here in Miami right now, and the rock is in the garage. The water gets pretty warm and it's really been speeding-up the die-off.

To be honest, I'm a little concerned that the water is getting TOO hot. During the hot days, the water is probably reaching 85 degrees (don't know for sure, because I'm at work). I know the good bacteria will be fine at this temperature, but I'm not sure about the life remaining on the rock. I don't want to lose all of it.

Pacific, I used Kent Marine Biosediment:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=7418&Ntt=marine%20biosediment&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=0&Nty=1

I had used it before in my 90 gallon with great results. The best thing I like about it is that it's very stable. Once it settles, it's hard to disturb it, so you can still go with high-flow-loving macroalgae like chaeto in your fuge without creating a sandstorm.

Jon, I just realized what you meant. When I said "I couldn't take it anymore", I wasn't referring to the ASM G-1X skimmer, I was referring to the smell coming from the "live" rock while I was curing it :)

Even though it was in my garage, it IS Miami in August, and the heat+the smell was EVERYWHERE. So to help speed things along, I dropped the G-1X in the Brute can. The stuff it was pulling out was amazing and the smell diminished considerably.

I wish I could have used it, but it simply did not fit inside my sump/fuge. The Tunze 9010 is a great skimmer, specially given its size, but I only bought it because the G-1X didn't fit.

Hey Sirjohn,
Very nice aquascaping....Do you think that the rock all the way in the back is too high for corals? Or is this used to mask most of the overflow. I am starting my aquascaping tonight on my 92 and will be doing something similar in the back, but was going to keep it about 6" from the top of the water line.

Husky, I went that high mainly to cover the overflow. However, given that I'm using T5s and not MHs, it also seems like a good place to put some crocea or maxima clams. I'd love to have a clam attach near the top in the middle of the slope so it can be viewed from the front of the tank, but we'll see how that goes. There is also a flat area right near the top that you can't see from the pictures that would be a good place for a clam, although you would have to view those from the top to really appreciate them.

The pictures you see above is only with the 4 X 24watts T5s on, which equal to about 160 watts when overdriven with the Icecap 660. When the corals come in, I will start turning on the rest of the T5s, 4 X 39 watts (= ~240 watts overdriven), for a total of ~400 watts.

rkelman, the other thing you see is the rigid tubing outflow from the Litermeter III. I rigged a Maxijet 3-suction cup plastic holder to hold the rigid tubin in place, with the help of some plastic ties.

I don't like suction cups either, but it was the best thing I could think off to hold the sensor and rigid tubing in place. I'm not TOO worried about it since if the cups fail, the sensor and tubing should stay in place anyways (they are held to the underside of the stand with a plastic cable holder). In any event, the sensor is really just a redundant safety mechanism anyways, since I programmed the Litermeter III to only dispense about a gallon of fresh water a day for top-off and it won't go beyond that unless it malfunctions.

When I got him he was supposed to be a white stripe but when I put him with my maroon, not only did he turn to the gold stripe and get very dark, my white stripe turned female and tripled in size within a few months. They are a tight pair but not sure if they can reproduce being I ended up with two different species. But that's okay, they like one another. I love your rockwork too.

Thanks. I painted the back of the tank with a glossy dark blue spray paint I bought at Home Depot (it lightens significantly when it goes on the glass and the lights come on).

I was between the dark blue and the black, and finally chose the dark blue because it was really more representative of the color of the water that frames the coral reefs I see down in the keys when I dive. (See my avatar).

Thanks, maroons are by far my favorite species of clowns. The gold stripe really makes the clown colors stand out when it becomes pronounced.

I'm no expert on clowns, but I don't see why they wouldn't be able to reproduce... I'm pretty sure other clown species mix it up a bit, why not maroons?

Hey Pacific. Fortunately, the diatoms and hair algae are on their way out. Bought a clean-up crew and one of my last pieces of equipment, a GFO reactor (I use phosban). Here's a pic:

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc283/miamijaaz/MoreTankPictures3024.jpg

Also, I got my last remote pump in, and so I finished the ATO and 2-part dosing system:

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc283/miamijaaz/MoreTankPictures3021.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc283/miamijaaz/MoreTankPictures3018.jpg

The Litermeter III and extra pumps were not cheap, but all-in-all it was still significantly cheaper than a calcium reactor system.

With the diatom and hair algae gone, phosphate levels down, and regular 2-part dosing, the coraline has really started to take off:

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc283/miamijaaz/MoreTankPictures2003.jpg

No other coral, fish or livestock yet other than the clowns and the clean-up crew, but now that the equipment is essentially done, I have nothing to spend money on BUT corals, fish, livestock, so expect pictures of new inhabitants soon. :)

Very very nice. Do you account your disappearance of hair algae to the phosban reactor and skimmer? This will basically be my 3rd setup in a year (1st was an inital setup, 2nd was a total rework for a CL), the first 2 did not get hair algae as an initial part of the process. I have a little red hair algae (not cyano) on my rocks, so I am hoping the new reactor/skimmer combo will take care of that.

As far as the doser, I too am not sure what I want to do. Before my switchover, I started chewing through Kalk. I have to wondering if a calcium reactor is inevitable, and doing the dosing route for me would be a stop gap? Either way, my next major purchase will be my controller, assuming no major surprises.

Thanks Husky. It was a combination of the skimmer, reactor and clean-up crew. Those snails and crabs work relentlessly...

The biggest problem I see with calcium reactors in corner tanks, assuming price is no problem, is the lack of space. I doubt I could have fit a calcium reactor, decent-sized CO2 tank, PH controller, etc. in my stand along with a top-off water reservoir. For me everything had to fit in the stand and I needed to see and access my fuge easily. I definitely wouldn't have been able to see my fuge without taking something out and that was a deal-breaker for me.

There is a thread around here that compares the pros and cons of calcium reactors vs. automatic 2-part dosing systems; it's a good read.

Those controllers are so nice, which one are you looking at, one from Neptune?

Husky_1
09/16/2007, 04:40 PM
Sirjohn, I really did not know how big a Calcium reactor is, but I did forget about the CO2 tank, so I think its probably not an option for me either (no room). 2 part will be probably end up being the way I have to go as well.

Right now the AC Jr (fully stocked) has everything I need in the price tag that I want to stay in.

Thanks Tom. It really took off after I put in the phosban reactor and my phosphates dropped. Also, after I started dosing CA and Alk automatically using the LitermeterIII.

I added an RBTA on Wednesday, but unfortunately it has decided to settle in the rear corner of the tank and I've barely seen it. The clowns found it though and are hosting. I'm hoping he'll move to better light though, because as it stands it's not enough light for him and I can't really feed it where he is at the moment... frustrating to say the least...

Hey Pacific. Unfortunately, the RBTA and GSM clown pair remain in the rear corner of the tank. The clowns venture out to the front every once in a while, but not a lot. Good news is, the RBTA looks okay and is expanding pretty well. I think I have managed to get some food into it using a long, thin feeding stick, but I can't confirm if it ate it or not, since I can't see its mouth. I will try to get a picture tonight and post it to see if anyone has any ideas on how to get it to move.

The easiest way to get a RBTA to move in my experience is to put a maxijet powerhead temporarily in the tank and point it at the RBTA. I'm not talking full on flow directly on the little guy, but some directed flow and increase it as necessary. This will probably cause it to shrink up and it's likely to move soon after. The problem is there's no telling where it will move to :-). Good luck with the nem....my one turned into four and I've been trying to keep them away from my SPS ever since.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think I am going to try the powerhead idea again. I tried it when it first moved to that spot without success, but perhaps I should give it another shot. I am going to try and get a (side) picture of where it is when the lights come on.

Okay, here's a picture of where my RBTA has decided to call home for the last 3 weeks or so. It may look bleached in this picture but it isn't really (not yet anyways); the camera and the difficulties in getting a good shot are to blame.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc283/miamijaaz/AnemoneTroubles018.jpg

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc283/miamijaaz/AnemoneTroubles015.jpg

Lighting is ~400 watts T5, combo of 36" and 24" bulbs spread out evenly over the tank. The anemone is located about halfway up the tank, in the corner, and the lighting above it is not too strong. Flow is provided by 2 Vortechs which are usually set at 1/3 or 1/2 power each. Flow in the back where the anemone is located is probably on the low end of the flow in the tank, although by design there are no dead areas in the tank (notice how much space is left between the overflow and the rock wall in the back--which may be contributing to the problem I know).

I am a bit puzzled as to why the anemone chose this spot, as it doesn't appear to be the ideal spot for it. I'd like to move it for obvious reasons, including the "selfish" one that I can't see it nor the maroon clowns!

I tried the powerhead idea once early on without success, but I am thinking of trying it again.

Any and all other ideas on how to get it to move are welcome and appreciated!

Rkelman: Thanks for the advice. I am feeding it atm, but since it looks healthy, I am going to stop and see what happens. I can also block the light some by pointing the individual Icecap T5 reflector(s) above the RBTA away from him. Finally, I am going to point a powerhead at it again. Hopefully, the combination of these things will make it move.

Thanks Pacific. The ATI T5 Procolors replaced two T5 Aquasuns, which I suppose I'll use as spare bulbs. The Aquasuns have really good par, but the light is really, really harsh, at least in my setup.

The worm crawled out of the sand a few days ago. It's long, very thin and white. It looks thicker because its covered in substrate. I think it's a spaghetti worm, but I'm not sure. It doesn't move very much, that's for sure.

Do you have a website for someplace that sells that sump? Thanks.

Sure. You can find the ADHI sump/refugium at Champion Lighting, www.championlighting.com

SirJohn,
Where did you end up getting the RODI and 2 part containers. Mainly I like the RODI topoff container, but seem to have issues finding something like yours. I do not mind my current setup with a HD 5 gal covered pail, but If I can save horizontal space, by going a little more vertical, that would make me happy. I am sure 1g rubbermade containers are pretty easy to find.

I just received all my pieces for my 2 part dosing, so I would prefer to set it up right, if I cannot find anything I suppose I can just add 2 milk bottles.

I just love your tank. The rock work. All the nice white sand bed showing and love your fish list. What corals are you going with?

Husky, I bought all of the containers at The Container Store in front of Dadeland. I opted to go with these smaller containers, and then use that 10 gallon brute when I go on vacation or something (away from the tank for more than 6 days or so)

Thanks for the nice comments Ritten.

I am going with a mix of lps/softies. I also plan to add a few clams at the top, make sort of a clam mountain or something :)

Work's kept me away from the tank recently, but I should have some updated pics soon.

Great Job on the setup... aquascaping... stand and canopy...actually, EVERYTHING!!!! Husky turned me over to your thread as I just bought a 92 corner as well. Your thread (& his) will be very insightful. If its not to much to ask, I was wondering if I can see your set up one day in person? Congrats on the great tank and work!!

Wonderful setup! Very clean layout. Any update pictures?

I just started a 54 gallon version of your tank and hope I can keep it as organized.

sirjohn,
I have been keeping an eye on your tank for the past couple of months. It looks great. I have the same tank and a similar stand, that has been running for about a year, however all of the equipment is second hand and we are wanting to upgrade. I was wondering if you can answer a few questions about your tank set up for me? What are the lights attached to? How are the lights configured, are they centered or staggered? Looking in my hood I was thinking 24", then 3-36" then 2-24", or was there a better way to make them fit. Do you find that the t5's are powerful enough for everything in your tank, namely the Anemone? Do you like the vortech's? Do they provide enough circulation by themselves? Right now we have 3 powerheads that are very ugly and I don't think they provide enough flow. We were thinking of breaking down our tank to add a sump, and in the mean time we could add spray bars behind the rock. Or do the vortechs add enough flow behind the rock without spray bars? Would love to see updated pictures if you have any.
Thanks,
Marcie

Marcie, keep in mind that spray bars usually call for a pressure rated pump, and usually take a lot of GPH...

Also, I am sure his t5's on individual reflectors are enough for anything, but if you are worried you can always fit a Mh + t5 supplement. I have a Lumenarc Stealth Mini De, + 2x24" T5 and 1x36" t5 on my 92 corner canopy.

The best looking tank I've ever seen (and I read ToTM). Everything is so well planned out down to the last detail -- it's aesthetically pleasing in every aspect.

I love it.

Great setup! I am actively looking at setting up a corner tank in our family room and hope to use your setup as the model.

One thing though, does anyone know if there is such a thing as starfire glass for curved glass on the 92 gallon?

Thanks Bernie for your comments. PM me and perhaps we can set up a date so you can see the tank in person.

Marcie, the lights are attached to a piece of plywood, that is placed on L-brackets in the canopy. This was done because the canopy is 12" tall and mounting the T-5s directly on the ceiling of the canopy would put them too far away from the water. The T-5s are staggered this way: 24"-36"-36"-36"-36"-24"-24"-24". It was the only way I could make them all fit. When all T5s are on, the Icecap 660 ballast overdrive them to 400 watts. Plenty of light for anything. The anemone is getting huge by the way. Updated pictures coming up later. The Vortechs at full speed will push 6000 gallons of water. Too much for a 92 that's not BB actually; I have them dialed back to around 60-70% each. As long as you keep the rocks away from the walls, the water goes everywhere.

The sump is an ADHI sump sold by www.championlighting.com

alittlephishy, Husky_1, mg426, Chibils and tomkb, thank you all so much for your comments.

This, as all tanks, is a work in progress. I will add some updated pictures later.

Great looking tank! I wish I would have found the alternative stand and canopy options before setting my Oceanic 92 with their matching stand and canopy in 2005!
