Frag plugs

Question,

Regarding Frag plus, not the ceramic ones... how long are you supposed to cure it in a separate container prior to being able to use it and put it in your tank? I'm talking about the ones you can get from fragfarmer....

I usually just put it in the toilet tank for ever or until I'm ready to use it.

I was told somewhere, that your supposed to put it in a container with aquarium water, then you'll see dirt or the water turn different... then you repeat the process a couple of times till water stays clean.. then your ready to place it back into the tank????

Just put them in the toilet tank for 2-3 weeks then throw them in the sump until you are ready to use it.

But what if you have those toilet disinfectant stuff or blue stuff/chlorine drop ins ??????

:D you shouldn't put them in there then. Can you put them in the bucket with FW and do wc every couple days?? maybe do that for couple weeks and slowly put them into the sump.

The best thing to do is soak it in a bucket of water with vinegar for couple days, drains and then wash it well with some fresh water and it is ready to use.

I second what Perry said.. I got mine inside the toilet reservoir .... until I use them. I releases the phospate out of them..

Ed, but you guys don't have any drop in stuff in the bowl with it though right.. cause the toilets all have the chlorine drop in and blue stuff... can't risk that with the tank..

Delsol, the vinegar will cure your plugs really fast, alot of aquaculture people are using the same method. I usually soak it for 48 hours in vinegar water (1 cup per 1 gal of water) and then rinse it and soak it again in fresh water for a week or so to be sure while doing water changes couple of times .... and then leave it in the sun to dry and they are ready to use. Try not to use too many new plugs at one time though or you might get a high PH spike in your tank

What are these frag plugs made of that you purchase them and they have to be cured for weeks after buying them?

Or are you talking about home made ones?

I think they are talking about the one that are home made using portland cement

I got them from Eric of Frag farmer.. during the last BA-CFM... they kinda look ceramic too me not the cement type

Delsol, you can cure it in any way you like, bucket, toilet, stream, ocean, etc. You know it is safe to put in your tank when it has no effect on the PH of the water. It could take any length of time. If you are only using a couple, it isn't a big deal to cheat and use them early, depending on the size of your tank.
