Cant wait to have this running on my tank, this bulb suppose to have the look of the Phoenix but with more color pops ... the bulb is DE but is shielded so you dont have to use any additional shielding

You can see what it looks like here, they also have charts and par rating listed.

What an impulse buy. I just got a pair. These only come in 250 DE, right? The PDF file showed a picture of a mogul bulb.

Yeah for now they only have DE, hopefully they'll have the SE but with this kind of output and color combination I think I will switch to DE becasue I am tire of switching bulbs all the time.

Great. I was completely happy w/ the phoenix. These bulbs better be amazing! ;)

I am taking the plunge to so I hope they will be, but knowing Iwasaki, they always put out the best stuff. I am getting 3 bulbs and 3 double ends HQI :D so am in the same boat with you.

btw, these bulbs are already shielded so you can remove the shield glass on your hood to get more PAR, I think from what I've seen so far in the Icecap forum is that this bulb will have more par than the shielded phoenix

sweet, I'm going to order a pair and try it out.

i'm still too afraid of removing my shield glass... =/

Dont be afraid

Seously though there are tons of UV with sunlight and I dont see it buring any corals even during low tide when they stick out of the water. I've use double ended bulb without any shielding and my corals are fine .... although I cant say much about my eye sight now

Are these the waterscape bulbs they were talking about in the IC forum?

arnt the sheilds also there to protect water from hitting the bulb? i thought a drop of cold water on a hot halide bulb, means broken glass in your aquaruium....if im wrong, please let me know,as ill get rid of my glass instantly...it seems to block out so much light...btw...im using 14 k single ended hamilton bulbs. p.s my halides sit roughly 4-5 inches off the water, and sit in a canopy.

I believe these are. The link to the thread is posted at the top. Been waiting for these to come out, now all i need is my reflectors!

northbay-reefer
07/31/2007, 03:30 PM
Nuuze yeap its the one

Jazzmanb, I have water spots(meaning some water did splash onto it) on my bulbs and they never break, you have to have a good amount of cold water splash onto the bulb for that to happen. If you are using single ended bulb plus the shield then you are loosing some valuable PAR, I would take the shield off.

cool, i just removed my glass covers from my tank, and im sure ill be getting much more light into the tank....i just measured and my bulbs are 5 " from the water flow, which there is a lot of..the bulbs well deffinatly get some drops here and there from the flow, hopefully it wont be an issue..thanks for your reply, jazzmanb

5" from the water is a little low, you will heat up your water pretty fast too, usually the rule of thumb is 8" from the water for halide... so if you are getting too much spash you might want to move it up a bit.

Here is a photo. Ballast is the new IceCap. Bulb is new not burned in. I will post another photo if I discover any noticeable color differences after burn in or using a M80 ballast. This bulb is visually very bright. I personally would use supplemental blue light for asthetic purposes.

Steve, do you have any pics of this bulb with VHO (actinics only )supplement ?

From the picture, the color seems yellow to me, how does it look in person ? maybe I should make a trip out there and look at it myself

i think that the iwasaki 15/14k for the 175 SEs are by far the best bulb for 175 SE users, just as much par as a 250w MH without the heat

Yes here it is.

Could be because of the coral colors. I would describe it as a white bulb. It is in line with Iwasaki's Kelvin ratings for their aquarium bulbs which are all less blue than what you would expect. At least visually that is. If I were giving it a K rating I would call it a 10-12K bulb.

I would agree that it's the best 175 bulb however it won't compare to this new 250w bulb in intensity.

Just installed my pair. Not quite sure what to make of them yet. Visually, they're much, much brighter than my 11 month old phoenix's. However, I'm not quite sure I like the color much. Much, much less blue; my eyes probably need to adjust a bit, but I'm having a hard time seeing any blue at all... I'd say they're 10-11k? I don't think I'd recommend them without actinics. Anyways, we'll see how the corals respond over the next few weeks. Here's a before and after pic:

Wow nice tank, I like the blue look of the phoenix alot. On the second pic, did you have any actinics supplement ?

rleechb
08/09/2007, 10:55 AM
No actinics. Both pics are actually a touch more blue than they appear in real life. I might have to install some actinics eventually; if these bulbs burn in any less blue, it'll be too yellow for me. :)

I agree. I haven't noticed any color change after burn in on any Iwasaki bulb. But I would definitly not be happy with the aesthetics running this bulb without supplemental blue. My gut fealing is this bulb will be a fast coral grower.

rleechb,

I can almost guarantee your corals will lighten up. Pink will be bright. Green stag will go toward green/yellow. Please post anothe photo after 6-8 weeks. By the way I love your tank!

Ray,
I have 24" T5 setup if you want it. The reflectors aren't that great but work :D .. I know it's a little short for your tank but it's free :) ..

You really need a bigger tank man.

How many hours of operation did it take until you noticed the color difference?

Probably about a week's worth. The change was slow, less and less yellow, until pure white, and then blue. I'll post pics tonight, if I remember ;)

Hey Tom,
Hows it going? I just got back from LA and my tank looks like crap! I will probably be doing an overhaul/upgrade in the next couple months and was looking for a new bulb as well. Let me know how this new Iwasaki works out. How are the corals BTW?

Theo, sorry to hear that. I tested out the Iwasaki bulb and didnt like the color probably because I need 60 hours to burn it in , anyway, I am currently using Radium bulbs and love the color so far. Coralreefecosystem has it on sale.

The corals are doing great, everything are growing like weed. When your new tank is ready, we should hook up.

From what you guys have been saying, and that I think the Phoenix are a little too blue and want more of what I call "silver" in color or "crisp white" with my 2-96w PC Actinics, they should look good. I may have to look into these.

I am waiting for color shift over a period of time, which is why I don't really like the Ushio 14K I got last time.

Here's the pic I promised. Sorry it took so long. Anyways, I'm using the same settings on my point and shoot, so hopefully you can see the bulb's become a bit more blue.

Do you have any supplement blue actinics with this bulb ? I wonder what it looks like with some blue actinics

I have some actinics, but they're not installed yet. I made an impulse buy for a retrofit when I saw how yellow they started out. I'm moving to a new apartment in the next few weeks, so I'll install the actinics after the move (not looking forward to hauling the tank, lol).

So it's now October going into November. What do you all think about this bulb?

I am thinking of ditching my T-5's and going back to DE MH for my smaller setup.

northbay-reefer
10/25/2007, 12:22 PM
Eileen, I've seen these bulbs in person and its a bit too yellow for my taste, eventhough some people saids that it burn in more blue, I still don't see that much blue ... I like the blue look. But, I think if you supplement it with VHO actinics then it would probably looks better, still not blue enough for me though

I put it on my tank and hated it .. so I bought the Radium bulbs instead and love them.

Kinetic
10/25/2007, 12:35 PM
I'm just about to start using them. I ordered ATI Blue Plus T5's to supplement though.

2 x 175 watt Iwasaki 15K
2 x 54 watt ATI Blue Plus T5

When I get the light setup I'll take white balance corrected shots.

raddogz
10/25/2007, 12:51 PM
I'm torn between going back to the Phoenix 14K 250w and supplement with T-5's which is my old setup or just sticking with these bulbs and T-5 supplementation.

rleechb
10/25/2007, 01:42 PM
To be perfectly honest, I like these bulbs + actinics more than the phoenix's now. I put the phoenix's back in for comparison, and they looked way too blue for me. Maybe my eyes have adjusted to the new bulbs.

I certainly get better growth with them...

:)
