I know I've asked before, but . . . someone in Newport News breeds Benggai cardinals? Could someone send me his/her name?

Charlie I PM'ed ya about some cardinals!

J. Montgomery

Marvin was breeding cardinals at one time, but no longer. Hence, why he used to always have babies in the chaeto tank.

Charlie Davidson

Josh, we have several (3) choices now.. Newport News, after a short period of time.. Premium Aquatics just emailed me, some this afternoon.. And live aquaria.. (mine should be here tomorrow) (I could wait- with all this talk) (Patience has limits :lol2)

i'm not too big on shipping/receiving fish and corals this time of year. if something goes wrong in transit and the package is delayed, they are doomed due to the heat.

Charlie Davidson
07/31/2007, 10:46 AM
Agreed! I was sold, when they had a 14day period..
I would wait it our Fav. shop has them, and I know he is waiting on healthy ones.... but!!!! (big buttt:) )

J. Montgomery
07/31/2007, 11:08 AM
I ordered a single cardinal from LiveAquaria about a month ago and it died the first night :( Good luck.

Charlie Davidson
07/31/2007, 11:29 AM
Josh,, what did they say?? you get credit???
I used them before Alantis Aquariums opened. First time since..
Been so long--- my last order had a clown tang for 19$ -how long you think that has that been
Son was in grade school... 21 now..

J. Montgomery
07/31/2007, 11:34 AM
Yeah, LiveAquaria is good on their refund policy. Its just disappointing to lose any fish. If you're going to order something online, they have a first rate reputation.

J. Montgomery
08/07/2007, 08:59 PM
Wow, was it also in the sump or was it surviving in the display?

angelscrx
08/08/2007, 07:09 PM
In the sump on the skimmer side! Ain't that something?

J. Montgomery
08/08/2007, 07:16 PM
Yeah, thats crazy. Its lucky to have avoided going into the skimmer.

My three babies seem happy so far. They're living in my 10 gallon QT tank. They don't seem to really go after Cyclopeeze, but they get all excited about brine shrimp/brine shrimp eggs. I haven't checked too closely to see if any eggs are actually hatching, so I'm just running the net through them and putting it into the tank.

Charlie, whats the word on your baby cardinals?

angelscrx
08/08/2007, 07:21 PM
I fed them cyclopeze and they ate it up in my tank. Even the other one in the sump eats it. Hmmmm interesting!

I use the frozen bar of Cyclopeeze. They tend to look at it like, "Whoa, thats too big." I still put some in the tank anyways . . . hopefully they're eating something.

angelscrx

That's what I use. The red bag right from Atlantis? I that it out on a spoon with some SW and then mix it in and they tore it up.

Just a heads up for my northrn reefers, Jacob is selling his tank raised babies.

Charlie Davidson
08/09/2007, 06:26 AM
Mine still look healthy.. I have not seen them eat cyclopeze or flake.. so they do have me worried..
I put some very small live srimp in the tank and they ate them like candy..
They ate frozen at the retailer-- so I guess they will do fine..

J. Montgomery
08/09/2007, 09:02 AM
Charlie, where are you keeping your cardinals (display, sump, QT)?

Oh, those are much bigger than the babies I got from Angel. I'm worried that if I put mine in the tank they'd be eaten.

Charlie Davidson
08/15/2007, 10:27 AM
Josh, 2 of the 4 died.. the 2 left will only eat live shrimp.. GRRR. Liveaquaria did give me credit for 2.. and they claim they were observed eating frozen foods ( frozen at mail order place??)

If I remember correctly, wild caught Banggai cardinalfish have horrible survival rates.

Thanks for the baby...already took him in to my office and he looks really great in his new home... :)

He looks funny at times too...he likes to hang out under a small overhang between 2 rocks...right where the current from the filter flows down under the rock...took this video to show how he just kind of hangs out in this one area...

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p290/Hopeful_Reefer/3g%20Office%20Pico/th_BabyBengaiCardinal-1.jpg (http://s131.photobucket.com/albums/p290/Hopeful_Reefer/3g%20Office%20Pico/?action=view&current=BabyBengaiCardinal-1.flv)

And you are right, he does gobble down the cyclopeeze... :D

Nice picture. I tried putting my three babies in the hang on refugium. By the next morning all three had made it over the overflow and into the display. I was worried that they would get eaten by my royal gramma, but they all seem to be getting along. They hover around a fragspawn all day, they're cool.

Hopeful Reefer
08/19/2007, 10:21 PM
Yes, that is the Pico...here is a pic from a few days ago showing the whole setup...took in rock from my tank and some of my live sand from the tank as well so I wouldn't have a cycle...perfect size for the little guy to grow up in... :)

Thanks...the water is actually 100% crystal clear now unlike in the pic...nice home for the little guy... :D

J. Montgomery
08/19/2007, 10:41 PM
Whoa, that looks small. How much water does it hold?

phurst
08/19/2007, 10:44 PM
3 gallons. Got it from a co-worker. I didn't even try it....

Hopeful Reefer
08/20/2007, 05:55 AM
And I in turn got it from Pearson for a few frags for his 12g office nano... :D

It actually fits great right where it is...and it is the perfect size for my office...anything bigger and it would look way huge!!

And, as far as I can tell, the little guy seems to like his new home as well so its a win-win... :)

angelscrx
08/20/2007, 05:06 PM
Oh that looks way cool Jason thanks for sharing!

Looks like the male in my tank has a big mouth again so I may have more babies in the future. I have to figure out a way to catch him and quarantine him until the babies are born so i can get more of them to live? Ah well, we will continue to learn as we go.

Hopeful Reefer
08/20/2007, 07:34 PM
How about grabbing him and throwing him in the sump...babies seem to like it in there... :D

J. Montgomery
08/20/2007, 07:55 PM
I was told that you wait until the babies hatch. Then you catch the male at night while he's sleeping (he'll have all the babies in his mouth). When you put him in another tank he'll immediately drop all the babies. Then you catch him again the next day and return him to the original tank.

angelscrx
08/21/2007, 06:40 PM
Um I have 150g tank with lots of hiding places for him and that makes it hard to catch him but I will try the sleeping trick.

08/23/2007, 02:39 PM
How often have you guys been feeding your little guys?

J. Montgomery
08/23/2007, 02:47 PM
When I had the babies in the QT tank for ~2 weeks I was feeding them 1 or 2 times a day. I was hatching brine shrimp frequently and feeding those or Cyclopeeze. Now they're in the main tank, and it gets fed 1 or 2 times a day. I don't really add anything specifically for them since I figure they can eat pods. Though this morning one of them did go for a bloodworm which was kind of funny since it was too big for him to swallow.

J. Montgomery
08/28/2007, 09:12 AM
I'm down from three to only one left :( I don't know where the other two went, they just disappeared in the night.

Hopeful Reefer
08/28/2007, 09:56 AM
Sorry to hear that...I would normally tell you to check your sump...but since you don't have one...

Mine is still hanging in there...just fed him his morning cyclopeeze and he literally attacked it...

marvin has about 2 dozen baby cardinals at the store. they are in one of the corals tanks on the back wall.

probably still a little too small to take home yet though. i'd want them to fatten up a tiny bit more before taking them home.

Josh did you lose all three? I thought I saw that on another thread.

J. Montgomery
09/11/2007, 09:44 PM
Yep, I lost all three. . . after ~2 weeks in QT, I moved them to my new CPR AquaFuge thinking that it would be a good place for baby cardinals to catch pods and enjoy better water quality. Within a day they all made their way into the main tank (see the pictures on page 3). After about two weeks in the main tank, they started to disappear at night, one right after another.

Man, I didn't think that I was going to start such a monster thread when I initially started this one. Up to page 4 now!

"Not so the spectacular Banggai cardinalfish; a single decade of hunting for the aquarium trade has brought numbers down by an astonishing 90%."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6990095.stm

wow, cardinal fishes are going to be the next elegance coral if this is true.......so sad. :(

i will only buy captive raised, thats for sure.

J. Montgomery
09/12/2007, 10:43 AM
Apparently the survival rates of wild caught Banggai's has really plummeted since they were first introduced into the trade (possibly from cyanide capture).

Lots of people seem to be successfully breeding them, but an aquarium can be a dangerous place for a baby cardinal as Charlie and I have discovered the hard way.

Hopeful Reefer
09/12/2007, 05:48 PM
If I could figure out what mine is (male or female) I could possibly get another and try to see if they mate...that is definitely months down the road as this one is still a baby...

Charlie - Are you gonna put them in a tank by themselves or you gonna put them in with everything else?

Charlie Davidson
09/14/2007, 03:17 PM
I have a small tank set up for the BB ones.. The problem before the the "killer shark" glass shrimp I kept in that tank to feed the cardinals.. I just never thought about it... Those things are Mean>>>

Hopeful Reefer
09/14/2007, 05:07 PM
What kind of shrimp was it? I'm considering putting a small shrimp in the nano with my baby...

Charlie Davidson
09/14/2007, 05:19 PM
They are Glass feeder shrimp.. Not what you would by for tank..
Hey,,,, I saw a sexy shrimp today at Perfect pets.. They are great for nano's!! Very fun to watch!!!

My male has babies in his mouth again and they look like they are ready to come out. I have a small breeder net set up at the bottom of the tank with fake plants some shells and a coral skelton that the babies can hide around. I have seen the cards hovering around the top together and the male putting his face in it so hopefully he will deposit the babies there where I can just pull them out and move them to the sump. Last time I got four from the them but i am not sure how many they give birth to at a time?

angelscrx
09/16/2007, 09:27 AM
Well never mind, I found one baby stuck between the glass and the breeder so they didn't go into the net as I had hoped! :mad2: maybe they will end up in the sump like last time.
