I posted this in the DIY forum, and people suggested that I ask my question over here instead...

I want to add some limestone rocks to my reef aquarium, but I'm concerned they might add metals to my water (particularly iron). Can anyone tell me what the adverse effects of too much iron would be?

Is it silly to add these rocks? Does anyone have any experience?

Oh, and these rocks were purchased at a LFS...not mined out of the back yard :)

It's possible that the limestone might add metals to the tank. In practice, most limestone doesn't seem to cause any visible problems, at least from the reports that I've read.

I've done a bit of research, and it's looking like adding limestone is not advisable...so I guess our rocks are going in the freshwater tank instead! Aragonite is pretty much the only thing people recommend for salt water.
